According to tvshowsondvd.com: Lost: S4 (12/9/08) and Gray's Anatomy: S4 (9/9/08) are both coming to Blu-ray. The MSRP for both is $96.99, which is still nearly $70 with Amazon's 30% off. I can't afford those prices. (As a side note: it doen't appear Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters are coming to Blu-ray.)
I believe the prices for TV on BD will be the factor keeping this from being successful in hi-def. |

Actually, I can understand that... If the studios reduced their prices for these shows, people would expect/feel entitled to the following seasons at the new lower price point. Besides, if you paying anywhere near retail and you have internet access, you're failing as a shopper. Hell, Lost: Season 3 is $64 on Amazon now... And when it was on sale in January, it was actually going for $39.99 for a time. fitprod |
Price may be high but I'll still get Lost.

I stand corrected. It was 13 originally and the one they added makes it 14. So the press release is correct.

Actually, I can understand that... If the studios reduced their prices for these shows, people would expect/feel entitled to the following seasons at the new lower price point. Lionsgate has the best strategy so far by keeping the BD MSRP of WEEDS seasons 1-3 equal to the DVD editions. Heck, raise them up by 10-20 even if you want. But 59.99 for DVD up to 96.99 is going to keep TV on DVD BD an extremely niche market. Considering the strike shortened seasons of LOST/Grey's I think a much better price range would be... 49.99 for DVD (4-5 disc) *compared to 59.99 for the (6-7) discs of past seasons. 69.99 for BD Buena Vista is just being cheap with this wave of TV on DVD/BD titles. The strike shortened seasons should most definitely carry a lower MSRP than previous seasons, IMHO. Ugly Betty/Desperate Housewives are a different matter, they're just one less disc and maybe 2-5 less episodes... LOST on the other hand is going from 22+ from the first couple of seasons to a mere 14 for season 4. That's a loss of about 10 episodes from previous years, and at least 2 discs... with the same MSRP. That's just greedy. |
Man, I remember paying about $160 each for the four volumes of 'Twin Peaks' (plus about $50 for the pilot) on laserdisc about a decade and a half ago. Even $120 for each of the halves of season six of 'The Sopranos' on Blu-Ray seems cheap to me. I'm beginning to think that DVDs just became too underpriced too fast and gouged a hole in the market.
|
Did Laserdisc become the next standard? No. Why? Because of pricing (and other reasons of course). DVD became the standard because they priced movies at an affordable rate. X-Files was over $100 when it first came out on DVD...but it was also unavailable on Laserdisc or VHS (save for a few compilations). There was no such thing as torrents or downloads either. Nowadays there is no reason to even buy TV on DVD because nearly every episode of a TV Show is available for free online through the corresponding network, through iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, Torrents etc.
The only studio that has gotten TV on HDM right is Lionsgate. Pricing is on part with the DVD. |

If Buena Vista does even a bit better then they did on Season 3's Blu-ray edition it is well worth it. By far one of the best Blu-ray releases last year. I hope they continue with the cardboard outer packaging as well.
|
Yes but you have to admit they have packed more shit into 14 episodes than all of S2's 23 episodes. I'm not saying it justifies it by any means, just throwing that out there. I think the replay value will be higher because of it. |
Added Lost and Grey's.
I'm currently watching BSG Season 3 on DVD. Wish like hell is was on HD. Pisses me off. |

Updated to show Firefly is available at Amazon for pre-order, but no date on there. $62.95

The only show that I want for sure on BD is Deadwood. I can only imagine that it would look fantastic... Other than that, I'd also like the Soprano series in Blu-ray. I can upscale everything else.
|
I would absolutely love Deadwood. Having watched it in HD, I couldn't buy the SD. The colors would feel too muted. Probably $400 for all 3 seasons though.
|
Holy crap. How can this much time go by with no new tv shows coming to BD?
|
Prison Break Season 3 is coming out later this year.
I wouldn't expect an onslaught of TV shows anytime soon. The market needs to grow before studios start releasing more shows. They didn't make a splash with dvd until there were alot of players out there. Production costs for BD is expensive, and I'm sure it's really expensive creating a full season of shows. |
