Percentage of HD/ Blu movies that are double-dipped?

I'll be getting my PS3 tomorrow and was looking for movies to order, but I find myself pretty reluctant to double-dip on titles. So I was curious - what percentage of your Blu/ HD DVD collection consists of titles you already had on standard DVD?

Arpeggi 04-10-08 08:38 PM

About 60-70%.

Vendetta-AKK 04-10-08 08:48 PM

Almost every one for me. I have bought a few day and date stuff, but most of my Blu-Rays have been favorites that I have upgraded. You should sell the old to pay for the new though. That is what I have been doing and it has been going pretty well so far. It is one of the few advantages of being an early adapter, SD DVDs to the most part have not plunged in price yet. If you sell those, and hunt for good Blu-Ray sales you will make out reasonably well.

RichC2 04-10-08 08:48 PM

0% here.

BuckNaked2k 04-10-08 08:50 PM

Just a few of my favorites......and they have to have good reviews.

Drexl 04-10-08 09:24 PM

It's probably about half, or maybe 60%.

Gizmo 04-10-08 09:44 PM

60-70% at least. The recent HD DVD fire sale and previous Blu-ray BOGOs made many to hard to resist. Picking up the HD/BR for $10 and reselling the DVD for $5-8 makes it an easy sale.

GizmoDVD hit it on the nose for me. Now that those crazy sales are few and far between, I only upgrade the movies I watch at least 5 times a year and are significant upgrades to what I had before i.e. Face Off, Close Encounters, and Payback.

Also, if the price is right, and I have an older edition of a movie, I will upgrade such as I had the non anamorphic Mission Impossible dvd and the first edition of The Searchers.

Movies such as Casablanca and The Sting that I watch once a year, I can hold off on upgrading until a great bargain comes around for an HD edition. My Toshiba A-35 upgrades very well for me right now. I am in no hurry to gather a huge collection of HD movies.

Cartload 04-11-08 08:37 AM

44%. There have been a few times where I've been tempted to upgrade, but I haven't bothered. Also, I ended up buying/pre-ordering the following on Blu-ray even though I had them on HD-DVD:

Superman: The Movie
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Goodfellas
Batman Begins

The Bus 04-11-08 08:43 AM

Roughly about 20%, give or take.

kenbuzz 04-11-08 01:04 PM

Man, great topic!

35 of my (currently) 58 are double-dips, though several of those titles are multiple disk/movie sets (like Ultimate Matrix Collection or the Harry Potter Box), and I've got a bunch of stuff enroute from Australia and $50 at Amazon burning a hole in my pocket. But I guess I'm right at 60% either way.

Yavin 04-11-08 01:14 PM

Right now I'm sitting at 28%. That's including the Spider-Man 3 BD that was bundled with my PS3, but not counting the 5 free BDs I should be receiving from the mail-in rebate.

Constrast this with my HD collection, where 56% are double-dips (including those I received free with my player, but not counting the 5 free HD DVDs I should be receiving from the mail-in rebate).

BambooLounge 04-11-08 01:22 PM

Suprisingly only 23 of my 108 HD-DVDs are double-dips and 11 of my 37 BRs are as well. It was just a matter of luck that most of the HD titles I bought, were perpetually "i'll get to that movie one day" titles combined with the fact that not much of my SD collection has yet been released in hdm. My double-dip approach tends to be, if the film is worth owning, then it is worth owning in its most representative form. As for the extras, what does/doesn't get ported over determines whether or not I subsidize the purchase by trading in the SD version of the film.

I've included "free" titles as well as films I intentionally bought multiple versions of (ie: The Departed HD, BB exclusive, Target Exclusive). I'll probably use my Amazon GC for comedy double-dips...Sandler movies here I come.

beebs 04-11-08 01:24 PM

60-70% are second or third dips for me. I keep selling or trading in old stock all the time and always get deals on stuff. I personally don't mind paying a small premium to upgrade titles.

lizard 04-11-08 04:34 PM

34% for me. Most of the replaced SD DVDs have already been sold.

Moopher 04-11-08 07:59 PM

2 out of my 48 BR/HD movies are double dips. That would be: Batman Begins, which i will gladly triple dip for, the Italian Job, because it was a good deal for $10 bucks. Good deals won't stop me from double-dipping.

CapRockBrewingCo. 04-13-08 07:58 AM

About 30 of my 70 HD titles are double dips. I sell off the standards.

Mr. Cinema 04-13-08 09:06 AM

Don't know the percentage, but it is growing.

Bacon 04-13-08 09:29 AM

about 50%

Zen Peckinpah 04-13-08 09:32 AM

About 62% altogether. 55% for the Blu-ray collection. 68% of my HD DVD's are upgraded.

rdclark 04-13-08 09:53 AM

Maybe 15%.

My policy is to only replace non-anamorphic DVDs, except for movies that are very special to me. But I've made impulse exceptions when things were on sale for less than $10, which accounts for most of the 15%.

I currently have a 42" 1080p LCD. On this TV, newer anamorphic DVDs often look good enough that skipping the HD upgrade isn't particularly painful. I watched a rented DVD of "Sweeney Todd" last night, while I wait for the BD to finally come out. I saw this movie in a theater, but I swear it looked and sounded better as an upconverted DVD. The BD will probably give me a heart attack.

If/when I get a much larger display, upconversion will become less acceptable. That's why I like the 42" size during this transitional period.
