Definitive List of Blu-Rays without all SD extras

The goal of this list is to help potential buyers decide whether or not to upgrade/hold onto their standard-def versions of the discs based on whether or not the extra content available on SD-DVD is included.

Notes
- Missing production notes, photo galleries, and cast/crew biographies may or may not be noted. Obviously, this is only a guide. It never hurts to do your own research; a title that isn't listed may not have been updated onto the list yet.
- For now, this list is for Region A Blu-Ray discs and their R1 SD-DVD counterparts -- sorry, but it's a lot of work as it is!
- On titles with summarized listings, please visit www.dvdcompare.net for complete bonus feature listings.

Babel should probably have an asterisk next to it. The BD/HD DVD contains the same extras (just the trailer) as the original DVD that was released at the same time. Months later, they released a special edition on DVD, but not on HD DVD or BD.

So, it's not really a case of them withholding available extras.

Tolhurst 04-04-08 12:22 AM

I think the purpose is not to bicker about what is left off, but to help somebody to make an informed decision on choosing between the BR and SD releases.

Exactly. I edited my first post to reflect some of this.

Rogue588 04-04-08 03:00 AM

Aren't most of the Criterion Collection extras 'ported over for the Rock?

InnocentBlood 04-04-08 06:57 AM

good thread - i'd like to add Spiderman 1 and 2.

bookcase3 04-04-08 08:19 AM

Cast Away should be on there.

According to the back cover art (viewable here), the unrated extended cut is included. This review at High Def Digest also says the unrated cut is on there. This is the umpteenth time I've seen this brought up on more than one forum, so is the AvP case wrong or are some people just seriously misinformed? Or is there some other unrated cut floating around? I'm confused.

Bleddyn Williams 04-04-08 08:27 AM

I was just reading a similar thread in the SD forums, and thought one that listed what was lost on the jump from SD to HD would be a good idea. Well done for already having on in motion!

I suspect Fox will have a strong presence in this list!

kefrank 04-04-08 09:01 AM

i think the thread title is a little bit confusing. at first, i thought it was referring to Blu-ray discs that don't have any extras presented in standard definition (ie., all the extras are in hi-def).

what about "Definitive List of BDs missing DVD extras"?

Sort of agreed. Not so much for the possible confusion, but the thread title is slightly awkward, and the above suggestion sounds better to me.

Great thread, I like how you're usually mentioning which DVD edition, as most now days seem to have multiple options.

I think the main reasons people aren't sure is a) the front cover doesn't have any sort of "UNRATED" banner, the cover uses artwork similar to the theatrical SD-DVDs, and the back of the disc, despite listing it among the features, has the PG-13 logo. DVDcompare said the unrated scenes were viewable separately, but I'll go by what it says on the back unless someone says otherwise.

Thanks. Naturally, mentioning the edition saves me the trouble of listing all the features, so it's also just easier for me to do it that way.

As for the thread title, perhaps just amending "DVD" onto the end of SD would make the point clearer.

Thank you for creating this list. I normally have to google the hidefdigest review to see what features are missing (they are pretty good about cataloguing them).

I know it isn't out yet, but Master & Commander is going to be pretty stripped down. The press release says it will have only:

• Deleted Scenes: "Weighing Anchor," "Shipboard Life," "Superstition," "Dentistry," "Articles of War"
• Theatrical Trailer (HD)

Which means none of the stuff from the other releases.

I picked up the 2-disc SE used instead for $11. Stupid Fox.

Spoiler:

Alexander.. nothing missing really. The BD has newly recorded commentaries by Stone and Robin Lane Fox that are different than the ones found seperately on the DC and SE releases (unless one wants to list a DVD-ROM link to the "Online World of Alexander the Great")

Black Hawk Down.. Most everything from the DE release starting with Disc 2.

Thanks for the help abintra and everyone else who left comments, I'll be making an extensive update later.

abintra 04-05-08 03:11 PM

I propose a community project. With so few releases, if a handful of people volunteer to check one page of releases, the list could be comprehensive up until now.

All one would have to do is to copy and paste the titles into DVDCompare and look to see what is missing between the BD and DVD release(s). For releases that don't have a listing on DVDCompare, just scan HighDefDigest's Upcoming or Past Releases sections for announced features.

I'll volunteer to do page 1.

Updated a bunch of stuff from the past two days but I still have stuff to go.

Thanks for all your work, abintra. Since I don't have a day off work until Thursday, please skip a day before doing the next page while I finish the rest of the updates I haven't already done but are already posted here.

WillardC 04-06-08 07:06 AM

Beowulf & Grendel:

Deleted Scenes, Cast interviews, Costume Sketches, Wrath of Gods Featurette, (Blu-ray Disc only carries over the commentary, storyboards, and trailer)

The Road Warrior:

Alternate Theatrical Trailer, U.S. opening credits with 'The Road Warrior' as the title
(VHS clamshell tape also has a Behind the scenes featurette not on the Blu-ray or on any DVD)

Predator:

All extras from 2 disc Collector's Edition, Theatrical Trailer from original single disc edition

JimRochester 04-06-08 02:29 PM

The Blu version of Pearl Harbor was the original PG-13 version of the film so it was really equivalent to the original single disc release. The 4 disc SE has the extended R rated cut of the film and a crapload of extras.

tylergfoster 04-06-08 09:24 PM

List is up to date. Thanks a bunch, especially to abintra and anyone else who posted. I'm impressed that the list is so expansive and it's only been three days, but I guess I wasn't the only one who thought this was a good idea.

Feel free to post more updates (and also feel free to summarize the way they're summarized in the list, if you're using DVDcompare).

Predator does have a theatrical trailer, although I'm not sure if it's the same one from the original DVD release.

Oh, sorry about that.

Basic Instinct also leaves off a very brief introduction by Sharon Stone that is on the latest DVD release. (I think it's only a couple of seconds long)

Laser Movies 04-07-08 12:49 AM

How about adding Speed to the list? There is a lot of material on the 2 disc edition that was not added to the Blu-ray version.

2 Disc Award Series

Blu-ray

Drexl 04-07-08 01:47 AM

For some titles, it might be worth mentioning that they have the extras from the first disc ported over but not the second disc. For instance, Speed and Cast Away each have the commentary from disc 1 of each title's respective SE DVD set, but lack the 2nd disc extras. So, one could create a custom special edition with all of the extras (and more, if you count the "game" in Speed) by combining the BD with the 2nd DVD. I plan to do that as soon as I get a source for 2-disc cases.

The problem is a) this is not technically true, because Cast Away does not have the trailer on Disc 1. Not a big deal, but it still makes the statement incorrect on a level, and b) I guess I feel this is fairly easy to deduce from the list as it is already. The only two examples on the list thus far that I can think of where this does not apply are The Devil's Rejects and RoboCop, since most titles with 2-disc sets have the movie and commentary on the first disc, and bonus features on the other.

Plus...most of the discs this would apply to are Fox discs ;)

I find DVD-ROM features to be negligible and with bonus discs, obviously you don't even necessarily get that stuff buying the standard DVD, so those things I'm skipping over, but thanks for the update!

am I reading this thread correctly - all the stuff listed above is MISSING from the BD version? If so, then studios can't be serious about people buying BD over SD.. That's nuts to lose all those supplements on a media that has significantly more space to store them!

Or am I misreading this thread?

It's not just with Blu Ray. You know all the double and triple dips, the collector's editions, anniversary sets, etc that "upgrade" older DVDs? They more often than not leave extras off the new improved versions.

That's why I'm not jumping into upgrading everything. I had Beta and switched everything to VHS. Then I switched all the VHS to DVD. But not everything was on DVD so I picked up a Laserdisc player. I bought almost everything I could get my hands on. Then I had to upgrade to the more deluxe version. I'm pretty tired of wholesale upgrades. For a movie I watch once a year if that, SD is fine. Especially when it has a longer/unrated/directors cut that the BD doesn't have.

You are indeed reading this thread correctly. The only real answer is that studios are lazy.

HOWEVER, it does help to really read the entries for the movies. I guess it's just as important in my mind to show that what you're losing is negligible as it is to show that you're losing all the extras. Also, the entries will reflect what's missing from all DVD releases, and sometimes it can't be expected that the BR will contain all those features (for example, between the Universal and Lionsgate versions of American Psycho).

I have to admit when I found out I had access to a player I found myself buying more Blues than I planned on...it's true what they say, once you go hi-def you can't go back!
