The goal of this list is to help potential buyers decide whether or not to upgrade/hold onto their standard-def versions of the discs based on whether or not the extra content available on SD-DVD is included.

Babel should probably have an asterisk next to it. The BD/HD DVD contains the same extras (just the trailer) as the original DVD that was released at the same time. Months later, they released a special edition on DVD, but not on HD DVD or BD.
So, it's not really a case of them withholding available extras. |
I think the purpose is not to bicker about what is left off, but to help somebody to make an informed decision on choosing between the BR and SD releases.

i think the thread title is a little bit confusing. at first, i thought it was referring to Blu-ray discs that don't have any extras presented in standard definition (ie., all the extras are in hi-def).

i think the thread title is a little bit confusing. at first, i thought it was referring to Blu-ray discs that don't have any extras presented in standard definition (ie., all the extras are in hi-def).
what about "Definitive List of BDs missing DVD extras"? Great thread, I like how you're usually mentioning which DVD edition, as most now days seem to have multiple options. |

Thank you for creating this list. I normally have to google the hidefdigest review to see what features are missing (they are pretty good about cataloguing them).
I know it isn't out yet, but Master & Commander is going to be pretty stripped down. The press release says it will have only: • Deleted Scenes: "Weighing Anchor," "Shipboard Life," "Superstition," "Dentistry," "Articles of War" • Theatrical Trailer (HD) Which means none of the stuff from the other releases. I picked up the 2-disc SE used instead for $11. Stupid Fox. |

I propose a community project. With so few releases, if a handful of people volunteer to check one page of releases, the list could be comprehensive up until now.
All one would have to do is to copy and paste the titles into DVDCompare and look to see what is missing between the BD and DVD release(s). For releases that don't have a listing on DVDCompare, just scan HighDefDigest's Upcoming or Past Releases sections for announced features. I'll volunteer to do page 1. |

The Blu version of Pearl Harbor was the original PG-13 version of the film so it was really equivalent to the original single disc release. The 4 disc SE has the extended R rated cut of the film and a crapload of extras.

How about adding Speed to the list? There is a lot of material on the 2 disc edition that was not added to the Blu-ray version.

For some titles, it might be worth mentioning that they have the extras from the first disc ported over but not the second disc. For instance, Speed and Cast Away each have the commentary from disc 1 of each title's respective SE DVD set, but lack the 2nd disc extras. So, one could create a custom special edition with all of the extras (and more, if you count the "game" in Speed) by combining the BD with the 2nd DVD. I plan to do that as soon as I get a source for 2-disc cases.

I find DVD-ROM features to be negligible and with bonus discs, obviously you don't even necessarily get that stuff buying the standard DVD, so those things I'm skipping over, but thanks for the update!

am I reading this thread correctly - all the stuff listed above is MISSING from the BD version? If so, then studios can't be serious about people buying BD over SD.. That's nuts to lose all those supplements on a media that has significantly more space to store them!

HOWEVER, it does help to really read the entries for the movies. I guess it's just as important in my mind to show that what you're losing is negligible as it is to show that you're losing all the extras. Also, the entries will reflect what's missing from all DVD releases, and sometimes it can't be expected that the BR will contain all those features (for example, between the Universal and Lionsgate versions of American Psycho).
