Speculation about movies we may or may not see on Blu-ray

Here's an interesting post from trusted BD insider Penton-Man today:

"Wow.
So, I just saw what classic film has ascended to the top of the list for one of the studios in regards to “it’s due for archiving” and it will fit in this year’s budget.

This means a digital restoration, not some video restoration of an HD format (which in itself, is not an inexpensive proposition) but a full blown digital restoration with all the trimmings starting with the OCN. I suspect that Robert Harris will be called in for the color stuff, at least.

This could, and I emphasize the word could, have implications as to the home theater (Blu-ray) edition in 2009 or 2010.
So far, everything is hush-hush. Just bookmark this post.

It is a title that everyone here is familiar with."

Is it "Showgirls"? "Weekend at Bernie's pt2"??? Ack!! The suspense!!!

Gizmo 04-01-08 05:11 PM

Yawn. A big title in the next year or two?

Biodome.

Zen Peckinpah 04-01-08 05:35 PM

It HAS to be The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

That's always my response. Thanks nameless person, for information about something secret that will seriously occur in the next few years!

PopcornTreeCt 04-01-08 07:49 PM

More BD insiders trying to prove their "worth". Did this start with Bill Hunt stroking his epenis with his "something awesome is coming but I can't tell you about it" dialogue?

*sigh

Penton Man and vague should go hand in hand by now.

ytrez 04-02-08 08:29 AM

Wizard of Oz, obviously.

Mr. Cinema 04-02-08 08:46 AM

My guess was Jaws. 2010 would be the 35th Anniversary. And that is plenty of time for the user base to grow.

Gizmo 04-02-08 10:05 AM

Clearly its The Wizard or Troll 2.

Thats not funny! I love that movie :)

In other news, check the ugly cover art for Batman 66. Do they think West wont sell it, and are trying to sucker people?

$5 says if they stuck a picture of Mayor Adam West from Family Guy on the cover and said "BONUS EPISODE OF FAMILY GUY!!!" it would actually sell more copies.

<s>Let's not get too bogged down in speculating what Penton Man might be talking about. It's so vague that he could be referring to any of hundreds, if not thousands, of movies. If you want to start a general speculation thread (maybe this'd be more appropriate for the 'movies you'd like to see on Blu-ray' thread?), go for it.</s>

EDITED TO ADD: Doesn't really apply since I split this out of the news/discussion thread into its own speculatory place.

I think its more or less just people suggesting horrible movies in an attempt at humor :) Obviously they are working on new Blu-ray movies, and making a post that something "big" is coming in 1-2 years is sadly an attempt you get "woo hoo! Blu-ray rocks!!!" type threads over there at Blu-ray.com. Man, I spend way too much time reading that forum when I'm at work. Its the only forum thats not blocked by my works firewall, so I just randomly browse it and laugh at some of the posts. Sometimes I wonder if people actually believe everything to read and write over there. Some of that stuff is just so out of there. Sorry for my little rant...gotta get back to work now. Sigh.

As if!! Maybe some other people were just being smart-alecs, but "Weekend at Bernie's pt2" is one of the crowning jewels of Western Cinema. By far one of the most criminally underrated films in history, it delves sensitively and realistically into some of the deepest human issues. The performances are both nuanced and heartfelt, and the underlying subtext of "death as comedy" is one of the most artfully rendered and passionate statements of true post-modern intellectualism. It causes me to weep just thinking about it.

We should be so lucky to have a fully realized "Special Edition" Blu-ray release of this, a true masterpiece of our time.

that cover art, on its own, is actually pretty cool. however, it doesn't fit the spirit of the movie at all.

Yeah it looks nice, but the only relationship I can make to the movie, is the Batmobile hubcap.

That could also qualify Good Burger!

Would that qualify as "due for archiving"? I understand you're hitting on the color restoration comment, but who even own this title? Warner?

That one is reserved for Criterion's first Blu-Ray.

Maybe not, but I like it because it's a spoof of the cover for Tim Burton's "Batman.":

Wow, that's way too slick and modern for such a campy '60s flick. This is one time I'd actually prefer the big head shots ...should have stuck with the original cheestastic DVD cover, IMO.
