Curse of the Golden Flower is the most amazing movie you will see for some time, I think. The colors are incredible, the detail fantastic.

I finally got a Blu-Ray player. And I bought 20 top rated movies. "Curse of the Golden Flower" is one of them, and I agree it's just gorgeous. I also agree with the poster above, "Gattaca" is flawless! Just perfect. I'm watching "Underworld" now and it gets a 5/5 picture and sound quality rating from me. "Casino Royale" is also great. |

There are so many great parts in different movies that really show off the HiDef quality of Blu-Ray. I keep going back to Apocalypto starting from the scene where they are coming into the Mayan city. The scene on top of the temple where they show all the royals with the feathers and turquise is just incredible. It's what I show everyone that comes over to see my awesome setup:

I think I know what yer talkin' about! I was at Fry's one time and they were playing Pirates. It looked so clear I thought for sure it was a hand-held Video Featurette thing from the disc, but it was the actual bloomin' movie! :eek: |

I was able to watch The Orphanage over the weekend and it's another solid title. The outdoors scenes are terrific. The film has its share of dark scenes, but the detail isn't lost. This is a solid effort from New Line. The DTS track kicks some ass as well. Too bad I can't hear the full force of DTS HD MA yet. :(

Yes, I remember being amazed at the color detail on this disc. Some of the inner palace/hall was just unreal looking. |

If anyone is looking for a new reference quality movie, give Pacific Rim a spin. The picture quality and 7.1 audio will blow your socks off in the right set up.

Alright, why are 95% of the 'reference quality' movies on BD modern (within last 5 years) films? The only older films I've seen mentioned are 2001 (which does look great) and THE SHINING.
What are some of the factors besides age and lack of expense for a good transfer and encode that make older films 'inferior' on BD? I think that 35 mm original negative transfers should look GREAT with intact film grain, and that the movie doesn't have to be from a strictly digital source to be reference. |

Most people only want to know what reference quality is so they can show off their setup to their friends, and unless you are really in to home video stuff like we are then you probably don't realize that film grain is good and not bad.

Sunset Blvd. has some reference video.
The Hobbit EE has reference EVERYTHING. It was #1 on my top-10 Blu-ray list. Cloud Atlas is also reference. |

Loved the VQ of PR on both the Live Action and CGI. Fun movie to watch, perfect for any HDTV with BR and a great sound system. |

For epic older movies that looks like film, you can't beat the blu-rays of Lawrence of Arabia and Ben Hur.
