Looks like HD-DVD should have held out just a little bit longer...

It appears that HDDVD should've held out just a little bit longer but then again that depends on how you feel after reading the articles below. One could say that HDDVD pretty much used the same tech but then again who knows.

(EDIT: After reading the first article it does mention HD-DVD Players as well...)

This might be why Toshiba TRUELY backed out of the "war", but once again who knows, that's just my suspicion (articles below) What's your opinion?

#1 Summary: Sony/BLURAY
Sony, Others Investigated by US Government for Alleged Blu-ray Patent Infringement.... (NOTE: Toshiba backed out in Feb coincidentally the patent cease and desist order was filed Feb 20th.)

#2 Second layer of BLURAY protection breached/ BD+ If this is one of the reasons studios "truly" backed BLURAY it's out the window now.

Interesting. I'd bet most of those patent cases usually end in a large settlement.

GeorgiaBlakk 03-25-08 01:36 AM

That's true but if you remember, something happened before with patents in regards to Sony's "dualshock" controller which did put them out of commision for a while (They didn't make or sell one for a little while). The later agreed to pay after realizing their was no way around it.

Neither of those stories has anything to do with the end of the format war.

Toshiba was still named in the suit...

Gertrude Neumark is known as a high-tech Ambulance chaser. She's sued companies before. I doubt anything will become of this. If anything, if Sony and these other major companies are threatened, they will settle out of court, leaving Blu-ray and cell phones untouched and Gertrude having a few bucks to seek psychological counseling.

However, I think Gertrude will need to find pro bono counseling as settling out of court is even beyond my prediction unless Sony et al want this to go away fast.

I agree. HD DVD should've stayed going because Fox sucks and Sony and Disney haven't announced anything good and Warner is still releasing on HD DVD. While Paramount could've released There Will Be Blood and Sweeney Todd and Universal could've dug out more great catalog titles.
