I have never seen the tray pop open like this before when hitting the power button. Any way I load put a hd dvd in the tray and hit the close/open button on the remote. It says loading and about 5 seconds later the tray pops open. I tried 4 different hd dvd movies and all of them do the same thing. All you see on the front display is opening and loading. I did set the clock when it first turned on. Worst yet if you power the unit off the tray stays open. This piss of crap is defective. Don't they even test these things. All it came in was a brown Amazon.com box with bubble wrap on top of the unit. I am pissed off since it looks like I will not be able to find another A35 for ($162) again. Just by looking at the prices at Amazon.com. Of well back to my MIJ A2 brought back in Dec 06.
Also does the remote the same one as the A2? Because they both look the same to me. The model # is SE-R0252. |
If my HD-A2 has never had a firmware upgrade should I upgrade to 2.7? What version is best?
Will the update make any improvements to the video and/or sound? I've been trying to burn the ISO file and it's taken an hour to go 4% at 16X Write Speed. Is that normal? Should I try burning at a higher speed? Sorry for asking so many questions. |

I just tried again, this time using Active ISO Burner at a faster speed. The burn worked but when I put in the disc to install it I got an error message. According to Toshiba's website it means the 2.7 Firmware is incompatible with my Hardware. What?! =P

Burning problems can be all sorts of things. Hardware, software, even some invasive video game copy protection can hose up burners. BTW: I can't check 1080p/24 stability on my XA2 because it doesn't want to sync with my 720p Optoma HD72 projector. I just get 1080p/60. Weird because I can force the PS3 to 1080p/24 just fine. |

As far as issues burning the ISO file, Active ISO Burner is the program you should be using. It sounds to me like you may have a corrupted image. There's no way it should take more than a few minutes to burn the image...it's only 30-40MB. Try downloading again: official A2 2.7 firmware official A2 2.5 firmaware Also, if you had issues at 16x burn speed, I'd strongly suggest 2x. What type of media are you using? I have tried Memorex and Fujifilm CD-R blanks with good success. |
Kahuna,
I'd give still Toshiba a call, and be a squeaky wheel. Get escalated past the 1st level support rep. Then talk them into sending you a shipping label. Worth a shot... Good luck!!!!!!!! |
I'm finding this a bit odd:
My A35 was working fine with my settings on bitstream until I tried to watch the IME on Order of the Phoenix. When I did that, the sound cut out completely. I remember hearing that you couldn't bitstream with the PiP, so I switched to PCM and it worked fine. Then, when I switched back to bitstream, no matter what title I put in, I just get a horrible screeching sound. If I set either SPDIF or HDMI output to PCM, it automatically outputs in PCM. If I set SPDIF to bitstream and HDMI to auto, I get the screeching. I didn't update the firmware when I got the player because I heard of the problems with the last update. Anyone have any suggestions? |
Sounds like a handshake issue to me. What type of receiver/processor are you connecting to?
One thing I would try, in the interim: once you have the disc playing, try flipping your receiver's audio input back and forth quickly between another source (say cable/sat) and the A35. Also, are you running firmware 1.3 or 1.1? |
I don't see how it could be a handshake issue, as the player was working fine prior to me playing the IME on Harry Potter. Also, it still transmits PCM just fine.
|
Well, if you don't think it's a handshake problem, you could always try clearing the persistent storage to see if that helps.
|
How might I go about doing that? :)

Kahuna, hope the new one works out better for you!

MM:
Setup --> Maintenance --> Persistent Storage Then follow the guide at the bottom of the screen. WHAT THE...??? Damn, Damn, & Triple DOG DAMN!!! You've gotta wake up pretty early in the afternoon to beat that bretski fellow... I for one was SHOCKED to find that my XA2 had a stockpile of garbage packed away inside there! From what I understand, certain movies lay eggs as it were. It's kinda like Studio Cookies. Not bad enough we've gotta clean out our PCs. Now we've gotta clean up our DVD Players too? -Pablo Tres |

Got the refurb A35 from WareHouseDeals (Amazon.com) about 6:30pm last night. It came double box and the unit has no scratches. I plugged it in late last night. I then decided to test it out this morning. It plays the few hd-dvds I tested except for 300. But I have a problem playing true hd soundtrack. I was playing Happy Feet. I have all the settings on the A35 and Onkyo 605 set correctly. But when I select True Hd from the menu on the disc. I get no sound. All i see is true hd in red on the display and hdmi blinking. No sound. I can go through the different listening modes and still no sound. I pick any other soundtrack and I get sound and it shows up in the display area. I even called Onkyo and gave them my serial # to my 605 to see if I needed a firmware upgrade and they said no. I spent over 2 hours on the phone with them and we could never get true hd to work. I finally did a reset on the 605 and that did not help. I tested out Ice Age Meltdown on the Panny BD-30 I picked DTS HD Master Losseless audio and it shows up on the 605 display as DTS HDMstr.
Onkyo Techs think it's the A35 that is the problem. |
Do you have component hooked up as well as HDMI? If so, disconnect component cables from the A35.

A35 settings: Digital Out SPDIF: Bitstream Digital Out HDMI: Auto Digital Direct Audio Mode: On Dynamic Range Control: Auto Dialong Enhancement: Off Speaker Setting: 5.1 Onkyo 605 settings: 7. Hardware Setup -> 5.HDMI -> HDMI Audio Out: Off I switch Onkyo 605 HDMI Audio Out: to On and I get sound I have even set Digital Out SPDIF: to PCM and still have the same problem. Truehd and Hdmi blinking on 605 display and no audio. |
Have you tried disconnecting the BD30. Only having the A35 via HDMI, and then disconnect the A35, and only have the BD30 connected to the 605 via HDMI. Sorry if you've said you've done this already:

If it still doesn't work, look into getting an XA2.
|
unpopular opinion but i'd rate the A2 higher than the A35 simply for better scratched disc playability.

MY settings for the same players
I have the exact same HD players, receivers, and all connected through HDMI to my Sony-553000 so I will try to help if I can.
First off, with my Onkyo receiver: 1. Input/Output assign>>2.HDMI input>>DVD (A-35) IN 1 1. Input/Output assign>>2.HDMI input>>VCR/DVR (Panny 30) IN 2 7. Hardware Setup >> 5.HDMI >> HDMI Audio Out: Off A35 settings: Digital Out SPDIF: Bitstream Digital Out HDMI: Auto Digital Direct Audio Mode: On Dynamic Range Control: Auto Dialong Enhancement: On Speaker Setting: 2 ch If you need anything else, just ask since I am around my computer pretty much all day tomorrow. Hopefully this works for you since it is working just fine for me right now. I also am running with firmware 1.3 on the A-35. |
