So far as Sony is concerned, the title I most want is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That would get me to buy a player sooner, rather than later!

The only Bond films that Sony controls are Casino Royale and the upcoming Quantum of Solace. All of the older movies are distributed by Fox now.

Sony was planning on releasing that title last year when they found out the master simply was terrible looking and would not have made a good BD(think original Fifth Element BD as a comparison). No word on when this will get a release.

So they collect no revenue off MGM library releases?

Just read on the digital bits that the dirty harry collection is coming in june on blu-ray / HD-DVD ....

Are they worthwhile films, or is it a case where only the first one is good and the rest are clunkers?

First two are the only decent ones. I'm just going to wait till they release them seperately because you know Warner will end up doing it.

First two are really good and it dips from there, but honestly all are pretty enjoyable if you are a fan with the possible exception of the last one. Never liked that one, but found it rewatchable for Jim Carrey. When I first saw the film I had no idea who he was and it was fun to revisit that role after his stardom.

I'll pick up the Blu set fo' shizzle. Been waiting a long time for upgrades.

The original is obviously the best. Gritty, violent 70's procedural at its finest.

Magnum Force is damn good, not as iconic the first one, but a truly awesome plot involving Harry dealing with motorcycle cops who make him look by the books. Also features recent Oscar nominee Hal Holbrook.

The Enforcer is probably the weakest of the series, but Clint keeps the movie from being a bust-up.
Spoiler:
Killing off John Vernon was unfortunate though.

Sudden Impact has the "go ahead, make my day" line, and the scene leading into the line is actually fucking awesome. Probably third-best of the series. There's also Sondra Locke as a woman killing off the people (men AND a woman!) who raped her, a pet bulldog, and a groovy 80's spirit that smoothly transits the character from the 70's.

The Dead Pool gets shit on a lot, but I like it a lot. Sure, Liam Neeson's accent could eat Gary Oldman with its scenery chewing, and Clint starts to show his age, but it's definitely fun. Jim Carrey owns as the coked-out hair metal rocker involved in the case. Nifty premise too, and an awesome car chase spoofing Bullitt. Plus you could argue it kickstarted Guns N' Roses' career with its use of "Welcome to the Jungle".

Spoiler:
Also has my favorite (non-iconic) line uttered by Dirty Harry in the entire series. After the main bad guy fails to off Harry in the climax, Eastwood grabs a spear gun and tells the guy, "looks like you're outta bullets. Y'know what that means? You're shit outta luck." The bad guy is then impaled on the wall of a bait shop.

I agree. I don't know why the film gets a bad wrap. It is a lot of fun! It's practically a satire on the cop genre with it's playful sense of humor that runs throughout. A good time all the way!

For a series with five films, Dirty Harry maintains a surprising level of consistency. None are as good as the first, but each has their good qualities that make them enjoyable and worth watching.

Agreed. Who can pass up Liam Neeson as a sleazy director and Jim Carrey as an Axl Rose lookalike rock singer?

Seriously, I like The Dead Pool.

Sony owns a 20% stake in MGM. I assume they make some revenue off the studio's library (or else why bother buying a stake in it?), but they don't distribute the titles. Fox manages all decisions regarding the distribution of MGM's catalog.

The only reason Sony distributes Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace is that they co-produced those movies. Hence the obscene amount of Sony product placement in every scene of Casino Royale.

They even pimped Blu Ray in Casino Royale. Talk about alterior motive. Rather amusing though.

Yeah, and the movie came out BEFORE the actual player (cause they had delayed it). So, it seemed a bit odd that a resort in the bahamas would have their security cameras tied to a bluray set up.

But, alas, many things in the Bond world are not believable, I guess I need to look past it.

Oh well. I guess I'd rather they do CTHD right or not at all. And if it requires expensive restoration of the master it may be many years before it makes it to BD, if ever, because it isn't a title that will sell well, like Casino Royale.

Disappointing news.

It looks like North Americans are in for another summer of Daft Punk. The beloved French-humans-posing-as-robots will bring their robots-on-a-quest-to-become-human film Electroma to DVD on July 22 via Vice Records. The silent, experimental feature directed by Daft Punk themselves will be available on both DVD and the shiny new Blu-Ray format. The package is a metal case with imprinted cover images, and a 40-page book of stills from the movie.

In anticipation of the DVD's release, there are two screenings of Electroma scheduled for next week in Florida.

Electroma screenings:

03-13 Orlando, FL - The Club at Firestone
03-14 Tampa, FL - Czar

Speaking of Sony, I just saw there is a review here of Starship Troopers on blu-ray released overseas, any chance we will see a US release?

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen box art winner :

The fans have spoken: Sony has unveiled the winner of its 'Adventures of Baron Munchausen' Blu-ray box art competition.

As we've previously reported, Sony held a unique promotion last December, allowing fans to vote (via a special page hosted by Amazon.com) for one of three possible box designs for its upcoming Blu-ray release of the Terry Gilliam cult classic.

Now Sony has revealed the winner of the competition, with fans picking this illustrated take featuring the film's cast of famous characters:

As previously announced, 'Baron Munchausen' will hit Blu-ray April 8 (day-and-date with a new DVD re-issue).

Bonus features shared across both versions are set to include audio commentary with Gilliam and screenwriter Charles McKeown, a two-part documentary ("The Madness and Misadventures of Munchausen," "As We once Dreamed It: Afterthoughts by Terry Gilliam & Charles McKeown"), deleted scenes, and a pair of storyboard sequences.

Exclusive to the Blu-ray will be the "Marvelous World of Munchausen" enhanced graphics and trivia track.

Tech specs boast 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, English and French Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio, and subtitle options in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Thai.

Suggested retail price has been set at $28.95.

You'll find final specs for 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it is indexed under April 8.

Sony claims that their HD master is in bad shape and the film needs remastering. Which is strange, considering that their Superbit DVD looked just fine.

This may be another case, like The Fifth Element, where Sony has multiple masters of a given title and for whatever reason has lost the good one they used for the Superbit line.

Paramount is all sorts of screwed up right now. That rumor appears to be false and the Paramount "useful information embargo" continues.
