Re: Blue Underground and Synapse Films to release on Blu-ray

From Blu-ray.com--

If you think you're safe – you're DEAD wrong! Blue Underground has officially announced The Prowler for release on Blu-ray on July 27. This 1981 slasher movie (also known as Rosemary's Killer) is especially renowned because of the special effects work by Tom Savini. It will be presented "completely uncut and uncensored in grisly High Definition!"

Special features include:

* Audio commentary with producer/director Joseph Zito and special make-up effects artist Tom Savini
* Tom Savini's behind-the-scenes gore footage
* Theatrical trailer

synapse news via blu-ray.com:

Specialty studio Synapse Films has acquired the rights to three films from the Hammer Films library: Robert Young's Vampire Circus, John Hough's Twins of Evil and Peter Sasdy's Hands of the Ripper. Synapse chief Don May, Jr. told Fangoria that the studio has new high-definition transfers of all three features and that it's "very possible" that they will get a Blu-ray release.

Supplement producer Daniel Griffith is working with the studio on extras, including interviews with filmmaker and Hammer fan Joe Dante and Ted Newsom, writer and director of the documentary Flesh and Blood: The Hammer Heritage of Horror.

I think we should definitely remind them that we would like these on Blu. Shout! Factory needs to get going, too. Their Gamera releases are going to be DVD only.

I'm all in for The Prowler.

Come on Blue; I want more Argento films on Blu-ray!

Agreed, if only the rights weren't spread between BU and AB. Argento is one of my favorite directors and his films definitely lend themselves to hi-def transfers.

I emailed Blue Underground to thank them for the best news I've heard all year: City of the Living Dead and Prowler. After I was through smoochin' their buns, I asked them what happened to Maniac, and they responded:

We are currently working on a brand new HD transfer of MANIAC, which will be released as a 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray later this year. Details will be announced on our website in the coming months.

Fantastic! Definitely looking forward to it!

Agreed. The Bird With The Crystal Plumage looks excellent in Blu, and other than Two Evil Eyes or The Stendhal Syndrome (neither of which I've seen yet), we don't have any of his other films on Blu (other than an import of Suspiria, which doesn't look very good, from the stills I've seen). Surely those two companies could put some work into releasing Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno, or Tenebrae fairly soon...

I'm in for all 3 Hammer films. Hell, I've been waiting for Twins Of Evil and Vampire Circus just to hit dvd for years now. I thought Sony had been sitting on these. Wonder how Synapse got a hold of them.

I know. It's just wishful thinking on my part that AB or BU could license it back from them again.

I don't know if it means what I want it to mean, but this post from a few hours ago by Blue Underground suggests that something is forthcoming.

"The Terrifying First Chapter of DARIO ARGENTO'S "Three Mothers" Trilogy... Uncut, Uncensored and Remastered from the Original Negative!"

Never mind. I just realized that Blue Underground did re-release the AB 'Suspiria' on DVD a few years ago. The copy posted to the description is from that re-release (and presumably also pertains to the AB version that was released 9/11/01.)

Damn, I started to build my hopes up that they got the rights back, but alas, that is not to be.

Thats a good sign, since BU was pretty much done with acquiring/releasing new titles it seemed.
