Toshiba HD DVD Superbowl Commercial Discusssion
Today is the day. $2.7 Million dollar, 30 second commercial from Toshiba showing off HD DVD Players/Movies. Speculation is going crazy on what it might be from showcasing the new lower stand alone prices, cheaper software, badmouthing Blu-ray profiles, new studio announcement, going neutral etc.

I would be surprised if it was anything other than the video version of the radio commercial which just goes over the low price of the players and even comments that they upconvert DVDs.

I'll be pissed if it's just one of the same commercials we've seen on Universal HD.

For $2.7 million it would have to be something new (which I think a few people already confirmed) and hopefully make a difference. I they were planning on dumping the format, and Universal/Paramount leaving, why spend $2.7 million just to advertise a clearance sale?

Not to sound like a total pessimist, but I'm not expecting an ad that'll mean anything to any of us. Probably just "this is what HD DVD is, here are some of the titles you can only get on this format, and this is how inexpensive our players are".
Last year's Super Bowl ad, if anyone's curious:

The commercial aired during the 3rd quarter. It was better than their usual stuff (featured Bourne Ultimatum wowing a bunch of guys sitting on a couch) but it wasn't groundbreaking.

I heard that there were regional ads (most, if not all, of which were in standard definition), but there wasn't a 'national' ad that everyone was seeing at the same time.
I re-read some of the initial press, and Toshiba never said they paid $2.7 million for an ad. They just said they bought an ad that'll air during the Super Bowl -- never saying it was a national spot -- and it was the writers who dropped in the $2.7 million price tag.

Didn't see the ad in the SF/Bay Area - Contra Costa Area. We were getting bombed with a ton of politcal ads.
Assuming this was just a regional ad, this would go down as an epic fail for format promotion. I think it might officially be time for Toshiba to pack it in.
