HD-DVD: Are you taking advantage of a situation?

As most of the others on this board are aware of, there was this little reshifting of sorts of a small studio that produces HD-DVD's.

As I've seen by many - a mass majority is jumping ship or as some would say, ' Getting out while the getting's good!'

But how many of you guys/gals are actually purchasing titles now because of the opposite?

Getting in while the getting's good!

Since the announcement of the 'bad' news, I've been getting tons of great deals on ebay, amazon and these boards. To some's loss is anothers fortune.

You would think that these movies can be enjoyed even if one format is successful - I can see one or the other format's manufacturers going slightly-rogue to produce a 'superior' dual format player to satisfy the 'loser'. (Samsung apparently doesnt count rotfl )

I would think that in the end there will be no 'losers', just different colored cases. :)

Yep, you can probabley get a good 25% of your all time favorite films on HD-DVD before they close shop and brag to your friends, well HD-DVD went down fighting and I got alot of films, plus I have a collectors item in HD-DVD lol

BambooLounge 01-14-08 07:32 AM

I will be buying HD-exclusive titles and WB titles (after picking up 2 WB blu-rays in the B1G1 and dealing with the crappy menus) until they cease production.

Quake1028 01-14-08 08:02 AM

Considering I have 29 titles so far and have only spent a shade over $200, I would say so :).

How are the menus different with Blurays?

Draven 01-14-08 09:18 AM

Yup - I'll buy sub-$15 HD DVD discs until the whole operation closes up shop. Then, and only then, will I force myself to buy a PS3.

ozzfan84 01-14-08 09:23 AM

Where are good deals on the players? Amazon has the A3 for around 130 now... should I still hold out?

Patman 01-14-08 10:29 AM

I suspect you'll be seeing $99 A3 within a few months.

...which should have signaled the end of the war. But apparently consumers would rather spend $300+. Which makes no sense to me, but whatever.

What advantages? I haven't seen any great software sales since the Warners news. When I see those sales, yes, I'll buy more.

Totally agree. All the eBay and half.com auctions/sales I've seen are ending between $15 - $20, which is about what I paid during the various BOGO's and other sales.

I'd say the HD DVD sellers are the one making out right now.

kvrdave 01-14-08 11:20 AM

I am still waiting for great prices. I think we will see sub $10 stuff on new discs from major retailers. Obviously we had that kind of a deal with the BOGO earlier at Amazon when I picked up the Harry Potter stuff.

I think you need to wait longer for the format to get dead, and wait for the discs in storage to need to be cleared out by the manufacturer. If I could find super deals on used (around $7.50 each), I'd do it, but otherwise, I will wait until the prices are AT LEAST as good as the best sale I have seen before the was "ended".

darkside 01-14-08 11:38 AM

If stores dump their HD DVD inventories for $5 a disc I will grab them, but right now I'm not seeing any reason to buy HD DVDs. I'm probably going to be renting HD DVDs and buying BDs from now on.

True_Story1011 01-14-08 12:38 PM

Anyone else notice the IMPORTS not being up on ebay anymore... Before there was at least 5 - 8 for sale at any given time, and I'm not even talking about the ones xploitedcinema.com had up for BIN all the time.

highclassrob 01-14-08 12:47 PM

Good movies at cheap prices? Hell yeah I'll take advantage! $10 per hd-dvd will be a magic price point for me I'll pick up most anything in high def at that price. bring on the sales!

ozzfan84 01-14-08 12:53 PM

I just decided to buy an A3 from amazon for 132 shipped with the 7 movies. I figure it will be a good backup. Plus, I'm hoping the prices drop below 132 in 30 days so I could get some cash back!

Agreed.

Anyway, there's not a lot of hi-def releases that interest me right now anyway. I'm hoping to see more panicking and fire sales so I can get some cheap HD-DVDs.

WepaMan 01-14-08 01:25 PM

Another poll!!

Joy!!!!

namja 01-14-08 01:40 PM

I bought a ton of DVDs that I never watched more than once because they were cheap (<$10). Not going down that path again. If it's a movie that I feel that I must have, then I'll buy it for <$15. Otherwise, I'm holding off. I had already stopped buying movies since October (gasp!). Last HD DVD purchase was in September; last BD purchase was October.

I could only wish for your steady pocketbook.

nycdude 01-14-08 03:16 PM

If the HD-DVD scene has the current players at around $75 for the A3 model, I may take a nibble on a dying format if the the discs and everything else would be cheap like $10 and under. A BD would be in my future also once prices start to come down.

Spaceknight 01-15-08 09:38 AM

For everyone who's bailing on HD-DVD, there's someone else out there who's buying in to the format. (Well, almost. I've seen a few people on this forum say they're throwing players in the trash. They may be serious, I don't know.)
That person who buys a barely-used A3 and 10 movies on ebay is possibly going to buy more HD discs. I wonder what kind of effect that will have.

PopcornTreeCt 01-15-08 09:56 AM

I haven't seen any deals.

islandclaws 01-15-08 10:37 AM

I voted "no" but, not because I want out but, because I really haven't seen great deals yet. Great deals to me are HD DVDs, catalog and new, for $19.99 or less. In fact, to get me really interested they should be $14.99. Hell, I'd buy a lot of titles I normally wouldn't at that price. I'm still waiting for the axe to fall for good, then we'll see some amazing deals.

 Isn't that the truth. 1/3 of the DVDs on my shelf are still sealed.
