What will Netflix do with HD-DVD if Blu-Ray wins?
Pretty much what the subject asks... I have a small number of HD-DVDs, and rent most of my HD-DVDs from there. It just seems much more cost-efficient for me.
If Blu-Ray wins, will Netflix keep their stock of HD-DVDs? Sell them? If NetFlix gets rid of their HD-DVD stock, or reduces it, that'll probably be the final nail the HD-DVD coffin for me. EDIT: No poll. Nothing to see here! Just a real discussion! |
i smell a poll...

They will probably sell them in some fashion.
|
I think it all depends on the HD DVD customers themselves. If most die-hard HD DVD supporters follow through with their plans to buy up all of the titles they would want to watch during the coming "fire sales", then there won't be much of a market for the discs on Netflix.
Oh, and where's the poll? ;) |

I think there will be a sizable market for HD-DVD rentals for some time to come, considering the installed player base and future PC and X-box sales.
|
They will keep renting them. I mean how much shelf space does it really take to keep them. As they come back broken or scratched they will just phase them out and not replace them. If the demand for them completely dries up they may sell them, but considering the wait they have had to get them, they have already paid for themselves. In fact the surge of new Netflix accounts and new HD DVD owners from Christmas has just about every HD DVD in my queue on some length of wait (not like that before Christmas).

Around the 1:54 mark:

for those who don't want to sit through the video, he basically said Netflix will continue to offer both formats as long as the consumer wants them.
|
For those that don't watch it, Netflix is "agnostic" on the issue of format and will continue to provide anything consumers ask for, which is currently both.
|
in case you can't see the video netflix said yada yada yada, agnostic, yada yada,
all blu ray and hd dvds are and will be available, yada. |

Thank you frank, dave, and whotony. :)

I'll tell you one thing. With the rotten condition so many of my Netflix HD-DVD rentals are in, I'll *never* buy used from them!
