Damn, the PS3 doesn't have the resume feature? That is something that is really important to me, and might have an impact on me going with the PS3 in the next month like I was originally planning.

does any BD player have a resume after a power down? I don't seem to recall anyone ever mentioning it before.

More and more BDs are supporting the bookmarking feature so that is something. Does suck the PS3 is missing resume on powerdown. The weird thing is it does remember your place on all the video files you view on the harddrive.

Again, hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware upgrade. Darkside, just curious if you've seen any BDs with bookmarking built into the software yet.

My Panny BD10 had it and I also believe my Samsung BDP1000 does as well. From what I'm reading their newer models do too, but it depends on the disc.

The newer Lion's Gate releases should have this (going from memory I've seen it on Waiting and Good Luck Chuck). I think Sony's newer ones may have it as well.

I just got 3:10 to Yuma which I believe is Lionsgate. I'll check it to see if it's there. Hardware saving would be the best bet, but if it's in these titles that'll help a little.

I have noticed it on these as well. Spider-Man 3 definitely had it. I haven't checked on every title, but if I get bored later I may pop in a bunch and see. I know Warner doesn't support it yet. I tried on a couple of those titles this weekend.

Ok, I just bought (over my lunch hour) the 40 GB PS3 and a Blu-Ray remote. Also price-matched Dell.ca and got Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and an HDMI cable thrown in for free. Total money spent out of pocket: $140 :) (thanks to sales and trades on the side)

My question for all of you now is: How much space should I allocate to the sides, top, and back of the PS3 to ensure proper ventilation? The sales guy scared me when he said that the PS3s they have for demo on the floor have already overheated and advised me to put in on an open-top surface.

Did he recommend an extended warranty after telling you that?

I don't have a PS3, but I would give it the same ventilation that you would afford any other device in your component rack.

Actually, I talked to two different sales people. The first one recommended the 3 year extended warrranty, which I said I would have considered if I was buying an XBox-360, but otherwise for the PS3 I'd skip it.

BTW, Ratchet and Clank is awesome, and I beat it!

RockyMtnBri, how is your PS3 situated (ventilation-wise)? Do you have it on top a completely open surface or within one of the shelves of an entertainment unit?

It's on a middle shelf of a TV stand, positioned horizontally, with ample ventilation. Eventually when my front projector is installed, it will be sitting on the top shelf of a different TV stand that I'm using as a low-profile component stand. See this picture for my current set-up:

Thanks for the pic! You have a lot more room around your PS3 than I will have around mine. I think I'll have probably 3 inches to either side, 3-4 on the top, and maybe 3-4 at the back. I hope that's enough to prevent it from overheating.

As long as there's some sort of outflow of the hot air (like out the front), there shouldn't be a problem.

Question about setting up the PS3 to watch Blu-ray -- there is an option that states RGB Full Range (HDMI). The choices are "Limited" or "Full Range". Default appears to be "Limited". Which should I use?

Check the PlayStation 3 site about the specific definition. Do you have a 1080p display connected via HDMI that's relatively new? You can always change the setting and see if your system supports it.

So if I have a 720p with HDMI connection, it should just be fine as "limited"...

From the revised on-line manual:

RGB Full Range (HDMI)

Adjust the output settings for TVs that support RGB full range. For RGB video signals, the range of color scale that is input varies depending on the TV in use. This setting is for use when the TV is connected to the PS3™ system using an HDMI cable.
Limited RGB output signal is output in the range from 16 to 235.
Full RGB output signal is output in the range from 0 to 255.

Hints

* If black sometimes appears bright and sometimes appears pale on the screen when [Limited] is selected, set this option to [Full].
* If black appears dull on the screen when [Full] is selected, set this option to [Limited].

Got my PS3 set up, updated, and running this past Saturday. It does generate a noticeable amount of warm air, so I had to move the shelf above it up a bit to give it a bit more room to breathe.

But I'm very happy with it. It's quite a sleek machine, and it loads up much faster than my A3. The slot-loader wasn't nearly as much of an issue as I thought it would be. Watched the included Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray and was very happy with the picture quality, especially with the detail in the grains of sand and venom's black webbing (the movie, on the other hand, was not as impressive).

Looking forward to picking up Sunshine and The Rock now!

Great to hear that! BTW, I have Sunshine (watched it - great film) and the Rock (not watched yet) Blu-ray as well. One of my co-workers took the plunge this weekend and got an 80 GB PS3 so we have another member of the brotherhood!

Can anyone chime in on whether setting the "24 Hz" playback setting on the PS3 to "On" (instead of "Automatic") will have any detrimental effect on the television being used for playback, if said television does not support 24 fps?

I have the 37" Toshiba Regza, 720p model, and even after reading through the documentation I can't figure out if it supports 24 fps video sources or not. While we're on the topic, does anyone know if the Regza 720p line supports YCbCr from the PS3 (right now I have the PS3 outputting RGB Full and Superwhite but I believe I read that Superwhite only works with YCbCr)?
