I have an XA2 and a Denon 3808, and I love the ability to bitstream all the advanced codecs over HDMI and have the receiver do the decoding. Yea, I probably get a little too excited when I see the AVR display "DOLBY TrueHD", or "DTS-HD MSTR", but it really is state of the art. I guess to achieve this right now with Blu-ray, I'd need to get the BD30, but there are trade-offs there as well. |

So, what firmware version can I expect a 40 GB PS3 bought new off the shelf today to have? I don't suppose the firmware revision that is required for Profile 1.1 would be already included straight out of the box, would it?

Doesn't the PS3 have built-in WiFi? I've read elsewhere, that if you have a wireless network running in your house, it will do automatic updates almost on it's own.....any truth to this?

However you still have to tell the PS3 to look for an update as it won't do it my itself. This can be triggered by going to the 'System Update' icon, or trying to connect to the PSN and it will tell you your system is out of date and to update. |

PS3 updates work 100% PERFECT from a memory stick, no need to waste a CD-R. Best bet is to just plug it into your network or use the built in WiFi.

I agree with dsa_shea - just use your internet connection for the easiest. Follow the steps at the PS3 site for putting the update on media if you go that route. As long as you create the PS3 folder on it (and make sure it's formatted FAT32, not NTFS), you can use a thumb drive.
BTW Yavin, welcome to the PS3 owner community - I own a 60GB myself, updated to firmware 2.10. I am eventually going to update the drive to a 160GB and copy all 60GB+ of music onto it, maximizing it as a media server. I also own a PSP, and using Remote Play is a snap. |
get a standalone... ps3 doesnt do dts-ma and most likely wont be able to ....

Where are you getting your "information"? The issue with DTS HD MA is licensing and not being able to send the signal as a bitstream. The issue should be resolved in a future firmware update. HiDef Digest article |

I was in BB this afternoon and they had a managers special price of $369.99 for the 40gb. Would this be considered a fair price? I don't have any PS2 games so backwards compatibility is moot.

On the switcher I'd suggest getting a 3X or 4X switcher. Not much more money and will allow you to future proof a little. At first I thought I'd never use 5X, but I had four filled up for a while (but even tho OTA HD is better then Dish, I didn't think enough so to keep my OTA Tuner, so out it came). Oh and yea...you will need another cable, none comes with the switcher. |
