HD DVD Zodiac (mainly for the supplementals - I hope) Blu Unbreakable That's about it. Nothing else screams "Buy me!!!" |
Bah, more BR titles I want. Maybe I will have to buy a PS3 afterall. . .
|
I've been watching Zodiac, and it's a great set. All the special features are in HD, and the movie looks gorgeous.

I couldn't be more disappointed in that early list for 2008. Honestly only Monty Python's Life of Brian and Bonnie and Clyde are must haves. There are a few rentals on the list, but not much I'm buying.
Where are the classic films? The Kubrick stuff and Blade Runner were among my highlights for 2008 and I can only hope Warner dips deeper in the library next year. |
I have a ton on order. Mostly through Amazon to take advantage of the $5 of $50 coupon.
Here's what I got on order: 3:10 to Yuma The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Bonnie & Clyde Before the Devil Knows Your Dead Gone Baby Gone Independence Day Into the Wild Man on Fire Master & Commander The Rock Shoot 'Em Up Sunshine Zodiac We Own the Night Will get eventually: Across the Universe The Adventures of Baron Munchausen Elizabeth: The Golden Age Enchanted No Country for Old Men Unbreakable That's all for now. 2008 looks to be the beginning of a new addiction. |
HD-DVD

I'll end up getting several from those lists, but my most eagerly awaited titles are:
Life of Brian Bonnie & Clyde Unbreakable The Rock Run Lola Run |

I'm looking forward to studios (hopefully) getting their act together by releasing better catalog titles and plenty more of them. Universal in particular needs to understand that this seemingly random selection process of theirs (which results in some truly baffling, awful releases) is not what the format needs; Paramount needs to actually start putting out some catalog films, period. Warner did a great job with the small number they released, but it should increase dramatically this year.
For specific titles, there are only three new releases I'm planning to buy: Zodiac, Assassination of Jesse James and There Will Be Blood. |
Of the titles announced so far there are not that many which are looking like being essential purchases for me, so it depends how quickly the prices drop or the BOGO sales arrive. Definites would be:
HD DVD Elizabeth: The Golden Age Into the Wild Before the Devil Knows You're Dead Twister BLU-RAY Monty Python's Life of Brian Dogma Run Lola Run Independence Day No Country for Old Men Really, there is such a weak list of announced titles thus far that I am starting to wonder whether the studios might be deliberately trying to kill Hi-Def, particularly with the pricing structure. Good example is Independence Day - a good catalogue title but an MSRP of $39.98 and not even with the raft of options/extras of the SD-DVD incarnations? |
These ones I most def. will get:
Zodiac: Director's Cut (Paramount) Beowulf (2007) (Paramount) These ones I might: Justice League: The New Frontier (Warner) Michael Clayton (Warner) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner) Bee Movie (DreamWorks) Bonnie & Clyde (Warner) |
I pre-ordered Zodiac and 3:10 to Yuma. I would like Con Air, The Rock, and Crimson Tide but those all scream B1G1, so I think I'll hold off on those.
I would love to stack the $5 and 10% a couple more times, but I just can't justify it with this weak lineup. |
I want a Jurassic Park/Jaws announcement!

when is the finished review going to drop? |
Blu-Ray:
Across The Universe 30 Days of Night Con Air Shoot Em' Up HD-DVD Zodiac |
Some of these are rumored to be dropping in 2008:
HD DVD Zodiac American Gangster The Godfather Trilogy Bonnie & Clyde Heat Collateral (this was mentioned for '07, I think this will be part of Paramount's more aggressive '08 lineup) Batman Batman Returns Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Theatrical Versions Scarface? United 93? Gladiator? Braveheart? The Green Mile? The Shawshank Redemption? L.A. Confidential? (where's that Special Edition that was promised?) Will we get any Hitchcock? Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds? Classic Monsters? Frankenstein, Dracula? BLU-RAY Alien Aliens Crimson Tide The Rock Master and Commander (very high on my list. the dvd contained one of the best audio soundtracks I've ever heard. DTS HD MA should be amazing.) Independence Day No Country for Old Men Lawrence of Arabia Bridge on the River Kwai Will Disney give us a nice 10th Anniversary Armageddon disc with PCM audio? Will we get some 007 movies? Will Fox give us Xmen 1 and 2? |
Independence Day
No Country for Old Men Resident Evil Con Air The Rock Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World Me, Myself & Irene Wall Street 3:10 The Brave One Twister |
