Buying Blu-Ray discs before getting a player..good/bad?

I'm not sure when I'll be getting a Blu-Ray player, probably within the month (And if I do, it'll be a PS3). Since there are good deals going on next week ($20 off 3 at BB, etc), I want to get the jump on these prices.

Is this a good plan, or should I do it all when I get the player itself...thoughts?

Edit: On a related note I already have Ratatouille on SD, but I hear good things about the BD...is it worth the upgrade?

RockyMtnBri 12-26-07 05:42 PM

I voted neutral, but grab deals while they're hot right now! Those things could dry up quickly after the holiday season. I have augmented my collection considerably with the BOGOs!

Good choice on the PS3 - I have one myself (60 GB)! Make sure you update the firmware on it ASAP and go to the official site to see what each update has provided:

i'd say good since i did the same thing exactly a year ago with the $10off google checkout. i stocked up about 15 HD DVDs before i got ze A2.

If you see a good price on Blu-Rays, I'd start grabbing them now. I missed a BOGO on Blu-Rays about a week before I got my PS3 this month and wish I'd grabbed what I wanted. Now it's wait and wonder when those particular titles will go on a comparable sale again. . .and of course, I'm anxious to watch stuff now!

I'd say it's a good idea, but I would first check out what, if anything, you will get when you buy the player. Sometimes you get a group of titles for free. The choices sometimes aren't so great, and even if you have to wait for them in the mail, you don't want to end up having to take something you don't want because you already bought something else you could have got for free.

For example, does the PS3 still come with Spider-Man 3? Obviously you wouldn't want to buy it if that's the case (unless you want the set and get that cheap).

It's what I did. Took advantage of the B1G1 sales and then when player prices finally came down and the technology was there. I got one.

Definitely try and sell off your remaining dvd's/replace dvd's with bluray format etc. As far as ratatouille, if you really enjoyed it, upgrade it! It looks stunning in 1080p.

Ratatouille also contains a good amount of extras that were not present on the DVD release - commentary, animation briefings, more deleted scenes, etc. It would almost be worth buying just for those, let alone the stellar HD image quality that is arguably the best yet. I say "arguably" because Cars may be slightly more impressive due to its style.

I'd recommend jumping any amazing deals (like the B1G1 sales). But the $20 Off 3 Blu-Rays at Best Buy isn't a really hot deal. BB prices are high, and with the $20 coupon you probably won't be saving any money compared to regular prices at Amazon.

My plan for this Sunday

Ratatouille $19.99 +
PoTC: AWE $19.99 +
Live Free or Die Hard $24.99
= $64.97 + $3.25 (tax) - $20 (coupon) / 3
= $16.07 each

Not that bad considering that none of those titles are relatively new and have never been in any BOGO.

There will probably be a handful of good deals at Best Buy combining the sale titles and the coupon. But outside of about a dozen sale items, there won't be many really good deals because of Best Buy's near-MSRP prices.

I'm pretty sure Ratatouille was in the last Buena Vista B1G1 sale (I could be wrong). And I wouldn't be surprised to see both Ratatouille and POTC3 in the next BV B1G1 sale. At Amazon, with their usual $23.95 price, you should be able to get both for around $12 each.

But if you don't want to wait, $16 each is a pretty good price for those 3 titles.

BDs will only get cheaper. I would wait.

bikerfool 12-27-07 09:29 AM

I had 10 before I bought and they were mainly bogo's

I've yet to see Ratatouille or POTC 3 included in any BOGO deals yet. Maybe Disney is trying to milk as much as you can from these titles before including them BOGO deals.

If these were catalog titles, I would agree with you but he's getting a pretty good deal on day and date titles.

It's not just Disney though. Usually no new releases are included in the deals until they are a few months old.

Depending on when he's getting a player, it may BE a few months. I'd wait. As the format grows, the prices drop...just like DVDs did.

I'm in the same boat...+1 for this advice.

Anyone buying discs before they get their players is nuts. What seemed like good deals a few months ago are now crap compared to what you can get with a little bargain hunting. The more of these there are in the marketplace, the lower the prices will go. New releases can be had on Amazon a week after they come out for 12-15 bucks.

Very true.

pricdews 12-27-07 11:31 AM

I almost weep when I see my unwatched $15 DVD titles in $5 bargain bins nowadays. For HDM I think renting is the best strategy. Studios are crazy if they think the mass public is going to pay $30 for new titles and $20 for catalog titles. They're already realizing this (hence the BOGOs). I've pretty much set a price point of $10-15 for titles that I really want. I'm not upgrading DVDs. I'm considering expanding my Netflix plan. Unless you're sure you want to get a player within a couple months, I wouldn't buy much.

bluetoast 12-27-07 11:59 AM

Whoah, what's the difference between studio and catalog titles?

Frozenhamster 12-27-07 12:06 PM

I voted good idea. I found a deal here in Canada for 2 Disney Blurays for $27 each and a free PS3 remote. Great deal, and since I knew I was getting a PS3 within a month I took it. Picked up Cars and Pirates1.

Timeframe is really the issue. If you know for a fact you will get one in the next month, then buy away. If you are considering it sometime in 2008, then wait, prices will only go down.

my wife will be getting me one for my birthday next week so today i went by the local hastings and they had a buy 1 get 1 for .01 sale. the manager said that BR wasn't part of it but i tried it anyway. not only did it work, but the guy scanned something wrong and i got the die hard collection and casino royale for $20!
