I should clarify again the original intent of the poll. We all want to watch movies in their best presentation possible, but I was curious what made those of us who have chosen Blu-Ray or HD-DVD choose that particular format at this stage in the game (when an ultimate winner has yet to be crowned).

Got the 360 addon for free from co-worker so going HD for now....
Have it going through my pc and out to HT .... |
I realized I should take advantage of having a 1080p DLP with HDMI while it was actually the recent technology

Plus i'm impatient as hell...there's no way I was going to wait a year, 2, 3? for one format to overtake (if ever) the other. Maybe it's just me but I find myself much more excited watching and buying Hi-Def movies then I was regular dvd's. I guess it's cause they look so good!! |

I bought the 360 addon drive for $150 back in March 07. That's about how much a hi-def drive was worth to me. I couldn't stand the noise from the 360 but liked the product, and I was low on inputs on my receiver, so out went the 360 drive and my Oppo 970 on ebay and in came the A2 + Matrix + 2 freebies. I bought the PS3 when I could get a 20GB cheap enough. After selling my PS2 it came to $270 which Blu-ray + PS1 scaling + maybe someday a PS3 game (PS1 via component video wasn't playing nice with my Onkyo 605 or my 37")- the PS3 was worth to that much to me. I find oddly though that there are few BDs I like. HD-DVD tends to have my favorites and BD only a few - and stripped-down-barebones Fox titles are a no-go for me. |
My upconverting DVD playing was going out and didn't like using the PS3 as an everyday player. So got in on a A3 deal and love it. Got it more for the solid upconverting that it does, but have managed to pick up a HD DVD or five ;)

As a gift to myself from getting a nice 4th quarter bonus, I purchased a 52 inch HDTV, and Xbox 360 HD add-on last March.
I picked HD-DVD over Blu-Ray because of the price, and also because my favorite movie, Casino, is from Universal. |

That is why I have been patient in waiting for a better Blu-ray Disc player (I am looking for Profile 1.1, analog outs, and on-board decoding for at least TrueHD). But some of my favorites figure to come out on Blu-ray Disc eventually, and I have already purchased several BDs, so I really would like to get a player in the near future. I may just have to accept legacy audio. |
I wanted a Playstation 3 because of Final Fantasy XIII (which I think is still going to be exclusive, right?), so I bought one along with our new LCD TV. This made me a Blu-ray adopter last year. More studios supported BR, so I was happy with my choice...I expected HD-DVD to be dead by this Christmas...
After Paramount/Dreamworks became HD-DVD exclusive, it looked like the war had been prolonged and that it might go well into next year (if not beyond--depending on Warner, maybe?). Heroes came out, Matrix was only on HD-DVD, so, a few months ago, I bit and bought an HDA2 as well... So now I have both formats... |

Okay, I'll clarify further. I chose HD DVD at first because there were more desirable titles available and BD got off to a bad start. There were rumors that things would happen, that certain studios would go neutral at CES this past year, but none of that happened. It was just the opposite: a bunch of titles were mentioned for release on BD while HD DVD kept mostly quiet. While many of those ended up getting delayed or cancelled later, at the time it was enough to convince me. (That's also when I stopped caring about sales figures.) BD started to get its act together, and it became known that the PS3 was in fact a really good BD player. Plus, as I said, I wanted a new game console anyway. So, then I got a PS3 and was able to buy movies on both formats.

I chose 'couldn't resist deals', but I have to agree, I'm a film dork, so love of movies is the true reason, but the deals were too damn good lately!
I was looking at an upconverting player for my regular DVDs, and the one I wanted was $90. While looking for a deal, I came upon the Wal-Mart early Nov $97 HD-A2 player deal, saw that it upconverted, and said fuck it. I bought 2, sold one for some profit to buy movies (I'm unemployed right now), and kept the other. I love it! The upconversion job on some of the standard discs is great, plus I can get the HD versions of newer films and faves...I'm happy. Plus, I was able to sell my old Panny CP-72 (which was the 5 disc version of the legendary RP-82) for $120, and it was almost 5 years old...Basically, when it was all said and done, I got paid to get HD-DVD. In the next few years, I'd like to pick up a combo BR/HD player, and jump into BR as well. |
My old main DVD player died. To get a decent player with all the features I wanted (upscaling, optical output and some other things I don't remember anymore) seemed to be moving up into the $150 range, so I spent the extra $100 (at that time) to get an HD-DVD player with 5 free movies.
