The HD Format War Is Over....NOT!
NOT!....I'm just joshin folks...don't get your undies all in a bunch. I figured that title would get some folks in here to start rantin an raving about who's the best. But before you all get off topic can someone answer a question I've had on my mind a for a couple weeks. If it's been answered, I wasn't able to find it. When the format war is over (and lord knows when that'll be), does that mean that the respective companies will have to re-release the titles in the dominant format? So if HD wins, Sony & Disney will have to release their titles in HD and if blu ray wins, Paramount & Dreamworks will have to in Blu ray?
Also would that mean that the computer companies would have to start switching out their respective players as well? I ask b/c I've been taking advantage of the b1g1 free sale on Amazon the past couple weeks and have over 30 blu rays (I guess Im' hoping for blu rays to come out in the end, though I have nothing against HD), despite the fact that I don't even HAVE a blu ray player yet b/c I'm waiting for prices to drop. (I'm holding off on the current deal with samsung bdp1400 b/c of the issues I've read about it not being able to play some of the current discs, even with firmware updates). Now that HD finally has their b1g1 free, I'm half tempted to do that but then decided I don't want to deal with 2 formats. In fact I almost bought a HP laptop over the weekend with a HD drive when they had their 30% deal but decided in the end that I didn't want to deal with 2 formats, so I'm just waiting. Though it would be nice to have a HD drive in case they do win b/c I have a feeling I will be buying a blu ray in the near future so I can finally watch some movies. But again, I don't want 2 formats. From what I've read, it sounds like whoever get's Warner Bro's is going to be sitting pretty. Blu Ray b/c if they get WB, then they'll have something like 70% of the major studio backing and HD b/c than that would make the 2 companies at 50% each. |
Actually, I was expecting the same Onion-esque article posted from 2 weeks ago.

rather than waiting for the war to be over- why not just do what a bunch of us are doing and make it irrelevant.
either buy one player of each format when they respectively go on sale at a killer price, or wait for a good buy on a dual format player. When the dual format players come out in force at well under a $500 price point (closer to $300 I'm thinking)- then the 'war' such as it is, will cease to matter for most people. Unless they are stubbornly stuck on their one 'pet' format. |
