..because in Canada the HD-A3 is $349. ($299 if you can find it on sale).

Venturer SHD7000 Now available at Canadian Wal-Marts
For those interested, someone on AVS just purchased a Venturer HD DVD player at a Canadian Wal-Mart. It included two free movies in the box as well.

What would the US price be, $150? I wonder if these will show up in America as the HD DVD pamphlets right now show the Venturer.

I was in my local Walmart for other reasons on my lunch hour, and there it was in the Electronics dept.
Apparently they got 5 in over the weekend, 2 were left (now 1)
Price: 199.97
Comes with 2 HD DVDs in the box (just says 2 HD DVDs included) - no specific titles.
I opened it, and in mine were
Rumor Has It (Combo)
The Perfect Storm

With the current exchange rates, it should be about $199.

From reading that thread, the "cheapest" HD DVD alternative the A2) is still $349 there. I wonder if we will see this in the USA for $149 or less?

If it doesn't, you can easily return it to Wal-Mart anyway.

After an update via ethernet, it now shows 1.3/1.1
I think it's safe to say it's getting it's firmware from Toshiba.
Also... have a looky here:

Available at USA Walmart now.

$199 is the Every Day price.
No doubt we'll see sales of $50 off or more in the future.

Couldn't you have bought it online through Amazon? Nothing personal, but I would not buy the cheapest player I could find when it comes to new technology.
Venturer is not well known for delivering a "quality" product, just a price point product.
For your sake, I hope the manufacturer stays up to date on possibly needed firmware updates.

Aside from that, if it is Toshiba firmware you should have a decent working player.

Toshiba Canada will not honour a US purchased player's warranty.
The mail in promo for the US won't accept a Canadian address, and the Canadian promo won't accept a US receipt.
Also, technically the HD-A3 *IS* a Venturer, as it has been stated by a dealer here in Canada with ties to Alco (parent company of Venturer) that Alco produces the HD-A3 for Toshiba, and part of the agreement is that Alco can sell a rebadged version under it's own brand.

Well, that settles it. I'll be strongly recommending this player to family and friends who want to get into HDM.
$199 CAD for a Toshiba firmware-supported player is great!
