TV: Shot in HD but released only standard-def

Is there any rhyme or reason as to which shows that are obviously shot in HD get released on HD/BR and why most only get an SD release?

I'm a huge fan of The Office (US) and watch it on NBC-HD. I'm very tempted to get the first couple seasons and rewatch them, but I know I'll be kicking myself if they ever get released in high def.

Well, just as with movies, you can't expect everything to get released in HD now. The market is still developing and they have to choose a limited number of shows to release.

Demographics are a big factor - the young males that buy HD tend to want action and sci-fi. That's why you see shows like Smallville and Heroes getting released but not The Office. Unfortunately, there seems to be an attitude that it doesn't matter if comedies are in HD.
