New to HD-DVD- A few questions.
 

Hey, i recently ordered a Toshiba A-3 for my birthday to hook up to my Protron 1080i LCD HDTV. I only have one HDMI jack on the TV and it is currently connected to our cable box. If i hook the Tosh up via YPBR cables will the resolution be less than if i hooked it up via HDMI?

And one more question. When i put in an SD DVD will it automatically upconvert it to 1080i? or do i have to change the settings?

any other suggestions to optimize my HD DVD experience would be nice.

From my understanding yes you need to connect via HDMI in order to get 1080 resolution. Mine upconverts to my Phillips with no special settings

HDMI is for 1080p. I'm pretty sure the component will still give you 1080i/720p.

You need to use the HDMI connection if you want your standard DVDs upscaled to 1080i.

The player will output HD DVDs fine over component in 1080i, but the DVD Forum does not allow any player to upscale 480i DVDs over an analog connection.

I would see if your cable box puts out 1080i over component.

IMO you'd be better of with your HD DVD player on the HDMI input.

it does put out 1080i, im going to hook that up to component and then just do HDMI for the HD DVD player. i can't wait.

And keep in mind that it's not really a 1080i LCD. That doesn't exist. It may ACCEPT 1080i but it's either 1080p or 720p (almost certainly 720p).

Being that it is probably 1366x768 there may be some marginal improvement though by running 1080i and downscaling, vs 720p (1280x720) and upscaling.

If you set the player to 1080i or 720p, and you hook up the component video cables, you'll automatically get capped at 480p for standard DVDs.
