tv is a sony KDF E42A10 42 inch rear projection. I've had it almost 2 years so it's probably a 3 years old model. I'd say the couch is 10 feet away.
I'm not saying the picture is bad. I am just saying the difference did not jump out at me at 1080i. I figured that was because none of my equipment can get to 1080p.

with that size screen and your viewing angle, I'm not really suprised you aren't blown away. I don't think 99 out of 100 would be.
Both of these, from what I understand are realtively grainy affairs. HD will offer a refinement in the way the grain is resolved- but it is not going to magically wipe it away. At your viewing distance, with that size screen- either way the grain structure is going to read as 'noise' in the picture.
If you ever step up to a 60"+ screen, start watching from 3' away, or get a front pj, you'll be glad you have those HDMs. Otherwise continuing to upgrade, the titles that you find worth it in your current circumstance will likely be few and far between
just my $.02

I agree. Definitely grainy. Michael Bay does add digital grain to the picture (kind of like Black Hawk Down only...not so saturated), which may have an effect on how "defined" the HD version looks.
42" is pushing it for "questionable" HD material--some HD movies like The Thing and Unforgiven should automatically jump out at you say, "HELLO! THIS IS IN HD!" I'd recommend at least a 50" for HD material viewing though.
On a side note, a friend of mine bought Transformers HD DVD on his 30" HDTV, and said he couldn't see much of a difference. Definitely need a larger HDTV size.

Its not just screen size- it's the ratio of size to your viewing distance. With a 42" screen @10' away he is viewing material at 3x screen width. Thats twice as far away as the recommended 1.5 screen widths, and some of us with 1080 front pjs are even inside of that, sometimes closer to 1 screen width.
HD will always be better, given the same transfer and equivilent compression/encoding quality- but at that size and distance your vision isn't likely going to be strong enough to resolve the difference or have it make much of an impact.

Some people tend to go straight to "well it's only 720p". It's more to do with the screen size/distance factor than anything else. I can barely tell the difference on my 37" at 9-10 feet, I wouldn't even bother on that. But the projector at 115" is a far different story.

I won't rehash what I wrote in my review, but just a warning to anyone looking to purchase this set online who might be checking this thread. I had two separate review copies busted up during two separate shipments, with one containing discs that are damaged beyond repair and a second that may likely exhibit the same result when I get the chance to recheck all the discs. It's a great set, but I suggest extra caution when tracking down a copy of this for purchase. It seems likely this is going to be a big problem for a lot of people.

I just got this set yesterday from Amazon UK for about $30 shipped. When I started watching my first episode, my jaw almost hit the floor. The picture was unbelievable! I kept watching and found that the sound was great, too!
You have to realize that the last time I watched this show was probably ten or fifteen years ago on TV or VHS. It may not be perfect, but they did an incredible job with the restoration of this series. I assume this will be released on blu-ray eventually, but for $30 I couldn't resist! Plus, if my HD DVD player craps out, I still have the DVD side of the discs I can use.
I would highly recommend picking this up at Amazon UK if you are even remotely interested in Star Trek.
