Tell me about the Philips BDP9000
 

Currently the BDP9000/37b it's 300 shipped from the Philips outlet

I did a search for the model but I did not see a thread on it. Is this a good BD player? At that price it's now the cheapest BD player. I was going to get a PS3 is this drive just as a good as a PS3?
It does 1080p and has HDMI. I'm new to the HD scene, what else should I look for in BD player?

Everyone is going to say go for the PS3. Personally I just can't bear watching movies on a game machine. I say at $300 go for it. It gets you in the door.

You should go to AVS and read up on this one. I don't think it's received many kind words. I have a feeling it'll struggle with the java titles like Spiderman 3 and Ratatouille.

What is your budget? For standalones, the Panasonic BD10A and the new BD30 are solid machines. Both are available for $499 (or less). The Samsung BDP1400 is now $399, but I've read way too many bugs about that unit. I've tested the Sony BD 300 and consider it a POS. The Sharp BD player has received okay reviews. The standalone that will probably come closest to the PS3's speed on loading times is the Panny BD30, which is also the first 1.1 profile and will handle interactive features.

I agree with Mr. Cinema. If your budget allows I'd get something other than Phillips. Did they even make a gen 2 player? I guess if a Kmart is near you PS3s are $320. At that price I could force myself to watch on a game system if I had to. :)

Or does it have to be Blu Ray? There is the $169 HD A3 on Black Friday at Sears. I'd grab that one to get myself in the door of HDM personally. Of course the majority of my films are Warners.

I have the 360 add on (I won it) but I was looking for BD to get watch disney/sony titles. Drives me crazy not having something like ratatouille in high def

Are you a AAA member by any chance? They have a Circuit City 10% off coupon that members get. Right now, CC's website has lowered the price of the Panasonic BD10A to $449. I have that machine and it is great. It's the only standalone that offers 7.1 audio and decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution audio. It's load time is slower than the newer BD30 and it's a 1.0 profile player, but it is probably the most reliable BD standalone. I would say the BD30 is, but it's only been out a couple of weeks.

Amazon had the 10A for $459. Keep an eye out there as well. Their prices go up and down constantly and with the new model out, they may drop the 10A down to $400 shipped.

Personally, the 10A, 30, or PS3 are the only BD players I would touch.

Pioneer > Panasonic > Sony > Sharp > Samsung > Philips when it comes to Blu-ray players.
