TV Can't Do 720p So How Am I Seeing 1080i From A 720p Game?

Don't know if this belonds in HD Talk or Videogame Talk...

I told my PS3 that my HDTV will display 1080i & 480p/i only. If the TV receives a 720p signal, it will downgrade it to 480p, according to the manual. When I play "Heavenly Sword," my TV confirms the signal it's receiving is 480p because the game outputs in 720p (per the back of the game box). This makes sense given the limitations of my TV. However, when I play "Ratchet & Clank," my TV says the signal it's receiving is 1080i. This doesn't make sense because the game outputs in 720p or 480p (according to the back of the box). Although I'm thrilled to see it in 1080i versus 480p, how am I viewing this game in 1080i?

The box is wrong; 1080i and 1080p support was added at the last minute to the game. It's apparently upscaled 720p.

To my surprise the game does actually support 1080i as well as 1080p if you disable 720p in your display settings... Similar to other games supporting those resolutions, e.g. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, the game does not actually run at that resolution natively, but is upscaled from 720p.
Wikipedia also lists the 1080i support:

Is there a list somewhere of 720p games that do upscale to 1080i vs the ones that don't?

I found a list of 1080 supported games vs. unsupported games in a thread here:

When in doubt, trust the TV's display over a marketing "genius".
