Sweet. Looks like I need to clear room on my DVR again.

Well at least I can finally get rid of my Blade Runner HD recording.

I think this is real good news for HD fans - it means the transfers have been done and are ready to be pressed...I think we will see HD Hitchcock sooner rather than later now..

These will almost certainly be taken from the HD masters used to source the 2005 box set. I'm sure Universal could have had these on HD DVD at any time since the format's release.

Right. Universal doesn't seem to be an any rush to issue any more of their classics (have they released anything even close to this since The Sting?), so I'd definitely watch these if you have any interest -- you probably won't see 'em on HD DVD anytime soon, and it's a safe bet that you definitely won't get a collection this extensive anytime in the short term.

I definitely won't have room on my external HD to save them all indefinitely, but I will definitely be keeping Psycho, Vertigo and Rear Window.

Finally! Guess I'll be getting a 500GB eSATA drive for my TiVo HD to go along with the 500GB internal upgrade I did when I bought it.

Does anyone have any speculation on when these would hit HD DVD? Obviously they won't be coming this holiday season but maybe this summer.

Possibly next summer. It does seem like a lot of movies on HDNet show up on HD-DVD/Blu-ray shortly thereafter.

Universal doesn't have much left in their library(barring Spielberg warming up to the HD-DVD format), so it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to release a few Hitchcock titles. I just hope they clean them up a little so we don't end up with a repeat of The Sting. I had to strain my eyes to notice any picture upgrade.

That would be my only concern, as Universal is definitely no Warner Brothers when it comes to the treatment of classics.

I'm torn between being pissed that I have Comcast and likely will miss this... and being excited that Universal has these prepped and will likely pull the trigger on some HD DVDs in 2008.

Just saw this comment.

My response: Huh? What do you mean that Universal doesn't have much left in their library? They have a very large library... I'm not sure where you're going with this.

Ignoring Spielberg, you have all the Universal Monster movies, Scarface, American Graffiti, Legend, To Kill a Mockingbird, Double Indemnity, Sixteen Candles, Conan, American Pie, Touch of Evil, Andromeda Strain, Fletch, Flash Gordon, Blues Brothers, Mulholland Drive, Out of Africa, Silent Running, Babe, Curious George, Slap Shot...

... and TV stuff like Law & Order, The Office, House, Friday Night Lights, 30 Rock, etc.

And that's just a few biggies that I came up with off the top of my head. Their catalog is just as deep as any other studio out there.

How much would a 500 gig sata hold if it's recording MPEG4 hooked up to a DTV HR20?

I'm not saying they don't have a large library. I'm talking about a lack of major catalog titles. The kind that make Blu-ray supporters lament the fact that they don't have a HD-DVD player. And sorry, but as much as I like Fletch and The Blues Brothers, neither of those qualify.

And regarding the TV shows, if those are a valuable part of their library, then why didn't Universal release The Office, House, Friday Night Lights, and 30 Rock day-and-date on HD-DVD?

And as for American Graffiti, I love the movie and would gladly pick it up if it were ever released, but I consider Lucas titles the same as Spielberg's. We'll be waiting a long time before those ever see the light of day on HD-DVD.
