Rumor: PS3 for $399 on November 2?

Would be a hell of a deal and would be even better come Black Friday (most likely.)

http://www.audioholics.com/news/indu...399-november-2

It's being reported via "industry insiders" (buyers) that Sony Consumer Entertainment America (SCEA) will follow Europe with a $399 40GB PlayStation 3 on November 2. This version, like its Euro counterpart will lack the PS2 "gene" and be unable to play the older titles.

The mysterious and nameless consortium of "analysts/buyers" are working with the understanding that Sony will bring a $399 version of the PS3 to market well before Black Friday in order to better compete with top-selling Nintendo and #2 Microsoft Xbox 360 this holiday season. According to a new report in The Hollywood Reporter, which cites an industry source, the $399 PS3 will actually go on sale starting November 2.

The report added, "A buyer for a major game retailer cited the same date, adding that SCEA has been dropping hints that stores should do all they can to clear out existing inventory in anticipation of the new model." While Sony had previously confirmed that the 60GB version will no longer be produced, it's not clear if the company will at the same time slash the price on the 80GB SKU (currently $599) down to $499.

Like the 40GB model just announced by SCEE, the new $399 PS3 in the U.S. is said to come with just 2 USB ports (instead of the four on current US models), no multi-memory card port, and it is expected to lack any backward compatibility with the PS2.

This may be yet another move to push more Blu-ray Disc technology into the homes of consumers. With the upcoming Spiderman 3 expected to release around the same time, it's a safe bet that some of the rumors of a bundle may have merit.

I may finally go neutral with this sale.

I wonder what supplies will be like for this?? Hopefully stores get enough

alfredog1976 10-10-07 02:37 PM

For gamers, keep in mind that it won't be backwards compatible (with PS1/PS2 games), no card slots and only 2 usb ports (as opposed to 4 in the other models)

kenage 10-10-07 02:59 PM

PS2 no but it will work with PS1 titles.

RichC2 10-10-07 03:44 PM

Sweet deal, now once it shaves $100 more I'll be on board.

firteen88 10-10-07 03:54 PM

is 40 gig enough? Whats the hard drive used for anyway? Whats the usb ports used for anyway?

is 40 gig enough?
--If you're not going to store a lot of video, pictures, music or game saves then yes it is enough.

Whats the hard drive used for anyway?
--Game saves, video files, music, pictures, system updates/system settings, etc. NO more 20-30 dollar memory cards......Hooray!!!!

Whats the usb ports used for anyway?
--To charge your controllers. To plug in other peripherals like Eye Toy, keyboards (unless you have a bluetooth keyboard), etc. 2 of them should be fine.

I do prefer having a PS3 with the card readers, Wi-fi, the extra 20 gigs and 4 usb ports.

The Spidey 3 pack-in makes it that much more tempting.

PopcornTreeCt 10-10-07 04:39 PM

Glad I got my PS3 when I did.

this version is slated to still have wi-fi right?

if sony would just confirm that the PS3 will get a firmware update to be BD-Live compliant, i would be all over this.

bunkaroo 10-10-07 05:02 PM

The thing that sucks about packing Spidey 3 in is that Spidey 1 and 2 can't be bought on Blu-Ray without buying the Trilogy, so anyone getting this would wind up with two copies of Spidey 3 if they wanted the other two films...and who wouldn't?

I have not seen that neither confirmed nor denied for this particular model. I know the cheaper 20 gb ($499.00 at the time) model didn't have wi-fi.

firteen88 10-10-07 06:46 PM

If that's all the hard drive is used for, 40 gb should be plenty. If it doesn't have Wifi I won't be buying it though.

I've read on AVS that this system will have wi-fi and come with the new rumble controller.

Hopefully that turns out to be true for all of the potential buyers waiting in the wings.

I'd certainly hope Sony can see fit to lower the prices of their standalone players if this happens. I don't want a PS3, and at $399, it looks like their BDP-S300 is the cheapest player out at the moment. Cut at least $100 off that and I'll be happy to go format-neutral...

A Spiderman 3 packaged in would be nice except for the fact that it is Spiderman 3 lol. (Worst movie I have seen all year)

I hadn't thought about that. Wow, that royally blows.

not really. Im sure Ebay will have both of hte first 2 films up to buy. It shouldnt be much of a problem

wewantflair 10-10-07 09:50 PM

For Blu-Ray, this thing is great. For games, it's absolutely worthless, since right now the only real reason to play games on the PS3 is its PS2 backwards compatibility.

True_Story1011 10-10-07 11:22 PM

I cant wait to see the BD to HD ratio after this goes into effect.

I doubt this will happen in big numbers.

There's going to be a glut of Spidey 3 BD's in the aftermarket if it does get packed in with the cheaper PS3.

Any seller who splits up the box set would be left with a bunch of copies of Spidey 3. And even if they could get up to $30 each for Spidey 1 and 2, once it got past that it would just be cheaper for someone to buy the trilogy and ignore the third movie.

I realize it's good marketing to include a Blu-Ray, and Spidey 3 seems like a logical choice given the Sony affiliation, but I still think Spidey 3 on BD is headed for being the most offered BD on the aftermarket. I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop below $10. I mean is there anyone out there who likes Spidey 3 enough to own it but not 1 and 2?

It's really too bad Paramount went HD DVD exclusive, because Transformers would have been the perfect pack-in BD IMO.

Sony's Eklund is now on record confirming that the PS3 will be 1.1 upradable. (See article in the Blu-Ray discussion section). I am certain 2.0 would be their target later.

I agree with that. I'm also hoping for an inexpensive, fully functional, standalone player in the next few months. It is looking promising.

For the patient, it is likely that Sony will release 1 and 2 individually eventually. Probably next year.

[But I don't suppose that there are many Spider-man fans who are that patient!]
