According to a thread on AVS, the Blu-ray of Independence Day has been postponed indefinitely. No new date given.

Warner announced The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford for SD DVD - anybody hear anything about a blu-ray and HD DVD release? My favourite movie of the year, I really hope the high def version is streeting on Feb 5th as well.

No, despite the fact that they've announced other day-and-date titles for Feb. 5th. Doesn't bode well.

Warner had it on their site for both formats.

Blu Bits:

First, 20th Century Fox has sent over a statement about the forthcoming release of Independence Day on Blu-ray Disc. The title had been set for release on 12/4, but has now been pushed back to March 2008. Here's the reason why according to the studio:

"We realize the forums have been whipped into a frenzy, so here are the facts: While putting Independence Day through our regular and rigorous QC process, we detected a minor glitch. Even though 95% of users would likely not know or encounter it, we chose to do the right thing and remaster, which necessitates moving the release date. It is now scheduled for a March release."

Has the Sin City BD been announced? It's featured prominently (screen shots and packaging) in the "Coming Soon" commercial from BV at the beginning of Bad Santa.

Yeah, they suck since they delayed a release so that they could actually do it right.

Sure, but why do they suffer from more cancellations and delays than any other studio? Heck, more than every other studio combined and then some? If their QC is this poor, maybe they should hold off on announcing titles until they're ready, sniping the way Warner was in HD DVD's early days where you barely had a couple of weeks' notice.

At some point, you get past "this is disappointing, but it happens..." and into "really, get it together", and Fox crossed that line a while ago.

As a studio, I love Fox. I think they have an amazing catalog, I have stacks and stacks of their DVDs, and they've put out some of the most deeply impressive special editions of any studio, but I really wish they'd get their act together with Blu-ray.

That's if you give them the benefit of the doubt. What exactly has Fox done over the past year with Blu-ray to earn that?

Yup, they announce the delay 5 days before it hits store shelves too. I'm not gonna argue the validity of the excuse used but it would've been nice if they could've simply remastered it before they announced it or at the very least announce a delay months before the release date as opposed to days.

My guess with Fox this is they simply don't build any time into their production schedule for dealing with unanticipated technical issues. Either that, or it is taking them much longer to produce the content than they thought it would, and any time they allowed for testing and fixing bugs evaporated.

Either way it smells like poor planning to me.

Independence Day would have been nice to have this year...but I'm just thrilled to have the Die Hard Trilogy (with 90% of the special features ported over), Edward Scissorhands, The Fly, Robocop, Cast Away and The Simpsons Movie. Master and Commander and Independence Day will make good first quarter purchases.

Unless they start pricing catalog releases like other studios, they'll never "do it right."

Great to hear about Bonnie & Clyde especially since I never picked up the DVD. Really hope WB starts announcing more such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Wizard of Oz and L.A. Confidential.

HDD now has a pre-order link to Amazon's page for The Heartbreak Kid on HD DVD.

Here's the strange part:

List price is 25.95, with a selling price of 18.15. I wonder if this is a mistake, or hopefully a new trend in pricing!

I hope it's a new trend. After almost two years I'd say it's about time we started seeing lower software prices.

I agree. However, that list price is lower than most day-and-date DVD list prices. That's what made me think it's a mistake.

Or maybe DreamWorks has no confidence in the title selling well given its box office performance.
