Release better titles in the HD formats!

Just in case the studios are looking at this, why are they releasing Cat People, Time Cop, Godzilla, etc. It seems like they should just take the list of Academy award winning movies and start with those, and throw in a guilty pleasure every now and then. Where is Titanic, Gone with the Wind, Amadeus, etc.?

Adam Tyner 10-04-07 09:05 AM

Most of the classics released so far have been selling dismally.

Overpar 10-04-07 09:18 AM

That's too bad. I can't believe Timecop and Godzilla would outsell Titanic.

Probably would, consider who has been buying the players and how many are in homes.

A quick look at the movie tastes of 90% of AVS' posters would put that theory to sleep in an instant.

stingermck 10-04-07 09:34 AM

Timecop was announced yesterday :)

PopcornTreeCt 10-04-07 09:36 AM

Reading through the AVS board it appears all they care about is how good the movie looks instead of how good the movie is.

Half of the posters would probably buy Manos: The Hands of Fate if it were available on HD DVD/Blu-ray.

so where's 'Charlies Angels' ;)

Mr. Cinema 10-04-07 09:46 AM

I still think the movies we've gotten so far in the first 1 1/2 years are better than what we got during the same time frame on DVD. It took quite some time before titles like Titanic showed up on dvd. I expect similar results for HD.

Unfortunately, the average PS3 owner doesn't care about Academy Award winners as much as the latest action flick.

The Departed was my first Blu-ray title.

Giles 10-04-07 10:14 AM

however 'The Departed' is not a back-catalog title.

Where is Good Burger?

I would have to think that's why titles like The Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca, and Forbidden Planet haven't been ported over to Blu-ray yet. None of them have PiP commentaries, so that's not what's holding WB back.

It's a shame though cuz those are some outstanding HD-DVD titles. Adventures of Robin Hood in particular is one I watch as much as any recent blockbuster.

Mr. Cinema 10-04-07 12:43 PM

Let's not punish only the PS3 users regarding buying older titles. Casablanca, and others didn't sell well at all for HD DVD. Maybe that is the reason why they haven't been released on BD yet. Did any of these older films reach over 1000 units sold? Considering the amount of HD DVD players there are, those low numbers are also really pathetic.

Hopefully the Kubrick titles sell well and reminds the studios that it is safe to release pre-2000 films on high-definition.

Maxflier 10-04-07 01:12 PM

Considering Timecop is my most wanted title, i'm not complaining!

I bought the HDdvds of Casablanca, Robin Hood and The Searchers (easily some of the best movies ever made), but I guess I was one of the very few...

stingermck 10-04-07 02:22 PM

Ive got Bullett, The Getaway, Rio Bravo, and The Cowboys. Doing my part!

I'd say the studios are doing an admirable job of releasing older titles along with new releases. Are all our favorite classic films coming out at once? No. But the studios are at least paying attention.

I bet a lot of people chose Casablana in the 5 free offer. I know I did. I wonder how that affects things?

That kind of thinking is what I've been afraid of. If Blu-ray wins the format war don't expect a lot of classics. Sony Pictures still hasn't released anything older than the 90s.

This is such a loaded comment! I would stop right there!!

I tend to agree with Mr. Cinema. Compared to what SDVD offered initially I believe that we are in much better position as of this moment. Classics and foreign/arthouse releases will likely gather more attention as time goes by. This was the case before and I have every reason to believe this would be the case this time around as well.

The upcoming Lawrence of Arabia will likely be one of the most meticulously transfered to HI-Def titles given the ongoing rumors pointing at its massive restoration budget.

I think 2008 will be a very exciting year!

Even as the original poster, I agree with you, but my key word was the "average" PS3 owner. And I don't think anyone would dispute that.
