I'm now officially format neutral....

The bug got the best of me last night at 12:30 so I ran out and bought a 80GB PS3. It's set up along with my Toshiba and I'm now officially format neutral.

Awesome. Now you're a two-time loser. :p

<--- getting an HD-XA2 in the near future.

darkside 09-23-07 01:22 PM

 Welcome to stress free HD enjoyment.

PopcornTreeCt 09-23-07 01:33 PM

Cool. Now you can enjoy all the movies.

Overpar 09-23-07 02:23 PM

Well played! I just did the same a couple of weeks ago. I ordered an hdmi splitter so I can switch back and forth with ease. That Blu-Ray uncompressed audio kicks @$$! I just watched "Tears of the Sun" and it rocked!

Spiderbite 09-23-07 03:05 PM

Yeah, I am enjoying my HD-DVD A2 player so much that I do see a PS3 in my future...once I get an HDMI capable TV that is (hopefully Black Friday).

Gizmo 09-23-07 03:12 PM

Its the only way to go. If anyone tells you either format will go away on the new two years they are crazy. Enjoy 100% of movies instead of 50%!

Congrats! The grass is greenest in the middle. :D

I'll pass on the PS3 for now and wait for a decent price on a dual format player like the new Samsung.

...You'll be waiting for a while. Both the Samsung and LG are priced at $1,000....which is $200-300 more then buying a seperate PS3/A2 right now. Dual Formats will not in the $500 range for atleast a year.

I originally bought the PS3 for Blu-ray, but I gotta tell you, I love the other features including the Media Server which allows me to access my music and videos on my computer's hard-drive.

Even if the format war continues with no clear winner, the PS3 is still one impressive piece of work and I'm glad I bought it over a stand alone BR player.

davidh777 09-23-07 08:47 PM

I just got the Xbox 360 add-on and am considering the PS3 also. I don't know, it seems like even if one format does go away you can still play the games.

EDIT: assuming, of course, there are enough PS3 games to make it worthwhile

Yeah...it really is. I'm not much of a gamer but the one that came bundled with the PS3 is very cool. My wife ended up running out to Blockbuster and getting some more games. The PS3 is very impressive.

Once I got an HDMI 360, I knew I needed an HD-DVD add on. I also recently bought the PS3. I figure with two game saves I can still watch the movies even if one format starts to dominate.

For a long time I didn't want to make the leap to a format war, but I started to realize I have a 1080p TV and should be enjoying it.

kvrdave 09-24-07 11:59 AM

Congrats. It was a good move that I made as well.

F For Fake 09-24-07 12:18 PM

I'm on my way to joining you. Enjoy my HD DVD player, but the recent release of Anchor Bay titles on BR and the impending Halloween holiday will likely see me picking up a PS3. Like many others have noted, even if one format were to eventually edge another out of the way, I'll still have the games to play. I'm interested in seeing how the PS3 looks on my 65" set. The 360 games are pretty mindblowing.

GreenMonkey 09-26-07 01:19 PM

I went dual format last month with a 20gb PS3 ($350 shipped off ebay).

I just wanted PS1/PS2 scaling (PS1 games over component spazzed out my LCD & Onkyo 605) and some blu-ray.

But oddly I haven't bought any BDs. There's not my kind of movies I guess. We're up to about 25 HD-DVDs. The few movies I did want like Memento are stripped of special features :(

At least Lost Season 3 is coming.

E Unit 09-26-07 01:28 PM

I went the PS3 route myself about a year ago and got mine from Fry's. I got the extended 2 year warranty which includes 1 replacement, no questions asked.

I'm thinking my PS3 may have issues in about a year......which is good if they install later ones with more upgraded hardware. I'll have a brand new PS3 come next year.

Admiral7 09-26-07 05:08 PM

I was planning to get a PS3 just to use as a Blu-Ray player, but I figured maybe I'd do some games too, like Tiger Woods golf. Why are the PS3 games only 720p while the same games in XBox 360 are 1080? That seems like a pretty major drawback.

Michael Corvin 09-26-07 09:08 PM

Are you sure about that? I thought the only difference on the EA titles was 30fps on PS3 versus 60fps on the 360.

As for why? Because the 360 has the larger install base. Why waste money adding development costs to maximize performance when a quick port will sell just as well?

Companies develop for what's selling and do a quick port to the other system to squeeze out a few more dollars from the consumers. It was the same last gen. Both the Xbox and the Gamecube were more powerful than the PS2 yet you routinely saw games designed for the PS2 and then ported to the Xbox and Gamecube. A publisher makes the bulk of their money from the large install base, anything else from the lower selling platforms is icing on the cake.

GreenMonkey 09-26-07 09:23 PM

Most games are proving to be 720p. It seems to be the sweet spot, just like 480p was last gen.

Jamers 09-27-07 02:46 PM

How likely is a PS3 40 gb by Nov 1st for $399 packed with Spiderman 3, Amazon still offering 2 or 3 free blu-ray disc offer with free shipping, and an improved 5 disc free mail-in rebate? Is that asking too much?
