planet earth on hd-dvd or blu ray?
i have a hd-dvd and a blu-ray player and am wondering which format has the better edition of planet earth, any ideas?

I think the only difference between the two is that the HD DVD has Dolby Digital Plus, while the Blu-ray only has Dolby Digital. But I remember reading the reviews of both versions on this site, and while the HD DVD review raved about the excellent sound, the Blu-ray review was more lukewarm.

I'm pretty sure the HD DVD version has lossless audio and all the SD bonus features...oh and I heard it automatically switches the disks out so that you don't have to get up. And it's cheaper!

I'm debating picking up the HD DVD of Planet Earth. Is this wise, or would it be better to get the SD version with all the extra features? I'm new to to the HD game and want more discs to utilize the HD quality, but I'm wondering how good the extras are on the SD. Does anyone know?

The video quality boost on the HD version is the ultimate extra feature. It is honestly night and day and goes from "nature is beautiful" in SD to "Holy shit, it's like I'm looking out a window!" in HD. It is absolutely wise.
Nature docs and sports are where it's at in terms of HD right now, with CG animations not far behind.

This bonus disc---exclusive to this SD-DVD release, apparently---includes "Saving Species", "Into the Wilderness" and "Living Together", three additional documentaries running just under an hour each. Covered in more detail below (under "Bonus Features"), these programs provide a more forward-thinking perspective of the world's ever-changing ecosystems, complementing the 11-part series quite nicely.
I'm assuming the UK version got this on HD DVD. I'm also assuming it will never reach us in the US. I guess it's priorities: PQ vs. Extras. I have a feeling I'll go for PQ because I'm in love with my new A2.

the picture quality on this series was insane on hd. it felt just like looking out of a window into whatever part of nature was being presented. hopefully blue planet will come out on hd.

If you get it from a B&M, make sure to shake the box & check for floaters, as the packaging is far from the best. For this reason, I would recommend the BDs IF you are buying on-line and really have no preference... better chance that you won't need to make a return for a damaged disc.
