Toshiba E10 problem with sound.

This problem is with the European Toshiba HDDVD but it might apply to the US model as well.

I had the E1 plugged via optical to my Yamaha amp. All HDDVDs were showing DTS on the amplifier; as the documentation said they should. I've just upgrade to the HD-EP10 so I could get a 1080p picture. I connected the player using the same connection as the E1 but now all sound shows as Dolby Digital. Is this a problem? My ears think the sound is not as good as before but this may be psychological. Anyone else experienced this?

Are the sound output settings on the new player different from the output settings on your old player?

Not that I'm aware of. The Digital Out SPDIF is set to bitstream and I just unplugged the optical cable from the E1 and plugged it into the EP10. Interestingly, the amp does briefly show DTS then changes to Dolby Digital.

Try changing it to PCM output and see if that gets you DTS.

No good, the amplifier definitely needs a raw stream. It is very odd; all HDDVDs used to show DTS on my E1. Now none of the ones I've tried do, except Mulholland Drive. Why this should be different, I don't know.

I'm somewhat confused.

Found the answer to this on another forum. Apparently the E10 down-converts the sound to Dolby 5.1 not DTS. If the sound is DTS-HD then it will convert to DTS. Not sure why this. Interestingly, if you have an HDDVD that lets you choose 5.1 as an audio option the sound is not as good as the down-converted one.

I don't know why Toshiba have chosen to do this but thought I'd post it, in case anyone else is puzzled when they buy one of these. (The manual still says converts to DTS, incidentally).
