Pirates of the Caribbean: CotBP BD framed incorrectly?
 

I saw a post over on AVS about this, but they've only posted two comparison shots so far. The top one is how it's broadcast on an HD channel, the 2nd is from the BD.

I sold off my DVD version a long time ago, so I don't have the means to compare them further (and the thread on AVS has turned into something not resembling the original topic). Anyone out there able to compare some other shots to see if it was only this one scene and not a large portion of the movie?

Obviously the commodore's head is being cutoff in the BD shot, but without looking at the disc it's hard to know whether the camera was moving at that point, or if it was a static shot. He could have also been walking downstairs into a static frame.

Either way, I've seen the Blu--Ray and at no point did I feel the framing was tight or wrong. I would think if anything was going to be wrong it would be the cable one, especially since HBO and Starz are both in the habit of showing 2.35:1 films at 1.78:1.

It isn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things (it's still a nice release and I wouldn't have noticed if not told), but it is sloppy on Disney's behalf. And I'd be pissed as well if I spent $40 + 25% sales tax (as the dudes in Denmark did).

I didn't notice it either when I watched it, but this still sucks. I hope it's only that one shot.

The problem with those comparison shots is that they're not the same frame...without seeing the movie again, I'm not sure if the camera was panning up or down at the time on purpose.

Is there a timecode for this scene? I'd like to check my BD.

I tried to line up the pictures to see the difference.
I had to shift one of the frames about 10 pixels to the right.
You can see the outline on the top and bottom where it overlaps.

It's not totally the same frame as the previous poster mentioned, but I don't see how it can be off so much.
Maybe someone who has both DVD and BD can take a snapshot of the same frame for comparison.

More screenshots of cropped heads in the AVS thread....looking like a framing problem to me.

That was then... could be a real annoyance watching it again now that I know about it. If the framing problem turns out to be wide-spread through-out the film, I think a replacement disc should be issued.

Looks like what happened to the Back to the Future DVDs. The telecine was centered too low in the frame, exposing extra picture at the bottom and cropping heads at the top.

I agree that it would be an annoyance watching the movie again. I had planned on purchasing a PS3 on the basis of Black Hawk Down and Pirates of the Carribbean. Now I think I'll pass on paying $500 to watch BHD in Hi Def. :/

You must really love POTC for it to be a $500 deal breaker.-wink-

I asked over at AVS, but I wonder why it took so long for anyone to notice... I know I bought both Pirates flicks on release day, but other than the 'movie showcase', I didn't actually watch Pirates 1 - I only watched Dead Man's Chest to prep for AWE... I'll have to watch it this weekend, but I used to be a projectionist and one of my huge pet peeves is anything being misframed (especially theatrically now that I am NOT a projectionist)...

The only time I have every watched either of the first two was on Blu-ray so I didn't catch it either. Hopefully Disney will address it.

I watched this in May when it came out and scanned through a lot of scenes last night.

There are definitely scenes where the framing seems wrong, but it does not appear to be the whole film. There were a lot of scenes that looked like they were framed well.

It still needs to be redone, but I think the fact that no one (including reviewers) noticed this until now goes to show it is not wrong throughout the entire film.

The fight scene in the rafters where the framing is so low that you can see the ground a few inches below the rafters looks to be another incorrectly framed scene :O

So how come this disc has been out for a couple of months, now, and this is the first people are hearing about the issues? And what happened to blind or distract all the "eagle-eyed" disc reviewers while they were critiquing it?

Per the AVS thread, it's looking like an 8 or 9 minute stretch is the only affected part. I believe it starts when Bloom enters the house and fights with Depp.

Sounds like they just bungled one reel or less. Definitely needs to be fixed.

Amazing... arguably the studio's defining and current crown jewel of a franchise and what do they do? I was waiting for a trilogy purchase anyways, hopefully it's fixed by then.

Also today, we have a follow-up for you on one other Blu-ray issue. Some of you may recall that a few months ago, viewers reported a framing problem with a few scenes in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Blu-ray Disc. Disney has apparently corrected the problem in production, so future copies going into stores will feature the correct framing (we'll try to find out if there's a way to identify corrected copies by the packaging - UPC number variation or something). In the meantime, if you have a copy with the mis-framed footage, you will SOON be able to call the studio's Blu-ray customer service hotline at 1-800-723-4763 (U.S.) or 1-800-877-2843 (Canada) to arrange an exchange. Don't call quite yet - we'll let you know when the fixed discs are ready. Just know that Disney has been working on the problem, and a solution will be available to you all shortly.
