Walked into my Local Costco and "Boom"

...I see Large seperate display of Toshiba Hd players in high traffic area for $249! with the 5 free movie coupons displayed also. No BluRay to be found...Just bought my player at Amazon for $299 couple months before...HD is certainly making this a battle..and with Paramount and Dreamworks onboard really makes things interesting..

Don't count on those 5 free HD-DVD movies. There are horror stories about cases being burned, cut, and mutilated.

If I buy HD-DVD I will wait for Best Buy or Circuit City to have a sale where the customer can pick HD-DVD titles in the store and not by mail.

Supermallet 08-20-07 07:47 PM

There were isolated incidents with cases from Universal only. Stop exagerrating.

ChristianB 08-20-07 07:49 PM

I remember getting my THREE free DVDs back in February and they arrived in perfect condition so please stop exaggerating Jason 1. As Suprmallet said, they're isolated incidents.

sman113 08-20-07 07:50 PM

And whats your point? I've never heard of the actual movie being damages? If you have that much of an issue with it, go buy a new case for $1.00

Just $50 more to go before it hits the magic JSP pricepoint...

PopcornTreeCt 08-20-07 08:03 PM

I don't think $200 isn't the magic JSP pricepoint.

So you agree that $200 is the magic JSP pricepoint, then. ;)

Actually, my Costco has BluRay in addition to HD. They also have it hooked up to an HDTV and playing a demo disc (which the HD isn't). However, they don't have a sign stating how much the BluRay player is. The do have the "5 Free Discs" offer for BluRay, though. So I guess BluRay is following HD's lead? :p*

* Seriously though, as i've stated before...i'm neutral and don't understand why everyone feels the need to bicker.

I don't either; it's $199.

Pillowhead 08-20-07 08:15 PM

It's weird that Costco sells HD-DVD players, but now you can't find any HD-DVD software.

I haven't seen a Blu-Ray player (aside from a PS3) and they sell Blu-Rays.

At least in my area.

Because it's the Internet, you dolt! When will you get it through your thick skull that ... ;)

My Costco sells HD DVD hardware and Blu-ray software bundles. It's certainly amusing.

My Costco sells Oscar Meyer, but not Ball Park. MARK ANOTHER ONE DOWN FOR OM!!!! Any day now this furter war will be over!

ResIpsa 08-21-07 12:17 AM

A couple weeks back, I noticed that each of the three Costcos nearest me started carrying the Sony BD player, in addition to a Toshiba HD-DVD model (second gen model, I believe). The Sony was $500 and the Toshiba $250 with a roughly equivalent number of units on the floor (perhaps a dozen or so of each).

What was intriguing is that they are also carrying BD four-packs for $85. There were maybe 4 different four-packs, with a couple of all-Disney ones. The few scattered HD-DVDs that my local Costcos had been selling earlier this year are long gone. So I am sensing that the war is beginning to heat up, at least in the J6P sense.

Engel07 08-21-07 12:36 AM

I went to my local Costco and no HD-DVD player in site..only Blu-Ray players and bunch of Blu-Ray movies only.

Has Uni stopped doing this? Otherwise, I'd say it's much more than isolated. Every person on the AVS thread in the HD DVD section confirmed their Uni discs came this way. I hope they stop, but people should assume they will get mutilated cases if they pick Uni titles.

They weren't doing it back then. I know because I was in on the 3 free and the 5 free offer. All my Uni titles form the 3 free were fine. My Uni titles from the 5 free offer were totally f'ed up. Many people reported the exact same thing at AVS, in the HD DVD section. It is not being made up.

I haven't seen any evidence that they've stopped doing this, but hopefully they will for those who haven't taken advantage of the offer yet.

I thought John Madden was going to hit you with a copy of Madden 08 :(

It's hard to gauge what a retailer is backing by what is on display in the store. Going by that logic almost every major retailer has backed PS3 and XBOX 360 this entire year and hasn't even bothered to throw any support whatsoever to the Nintendo Wii.

Groucho 08-21-07 09:10 AM

Did they also have a "Mission Accomplished" banner? Then we'd know the war was over for sure!

nazz 08-21-07 09:15 AM

Nope...it was a "Mission Impossible" banner.

I still remember Hungry Wednesday, when ConAgra decided it would sell its hot dogs exclusively through Costco. Now I needed a membership if I wanted to enjoy Hebrew National or Armour hot dogs. :(

Courtjester 08-21-07 10:27 AM

Now Costco need to get off their butt and starts selling HD-DVD movies. I saw a Blur Ray 3 pack, so maybe they will start selling HD DVDs.

The Carmel Mountain/San Diego Costco has both the Sony player and the Toshiba player. They have the Blu-ray 4 paks, but also recently started carrying about 8 individual titles of each format. The individual titles are all Warner and sell for $18.99. Someone mentioned in a previous post the Sony player was $500 at their Costco, but it is about $450 at ours.

I just got back from my local Costco and for the first time ever, they were selling HD-DVDs. They had the Blu-Ray 4 packs for $84.99, but they also had individual Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs for $18.99 each.

chanster 08-23-07 07:23 AM

Only Blu Ray player in the Lincoln Park (Chicago) Costco as of a few weeks ago.

stingermck 08-23-07 08:31 AM

My 2 Uni disc, has a small cut on the UPC. They were not set on fire, dipped in acid, or any other tragedy's.

Another vote for unecessary hysteria

My 3 movies worked fine too

Dont forget the Blu-ray player on the PS3. Several Costcos in my area have the PS3 for sale, and selling pretty well, they are near the X-mas toy aisle which is growing daily.

The local Costcos I go to used to sell HD-DVD movies and had them for a few months. Had a small section for them but honestly the stock seemed to rarely move/sell. They switched to the Blu Ray 3 packs only a few weeks ago and those don't seem to move either.

I walked into Costco yesterday and "boom" they have HD-DVD movies. Just a few of them though.

At the Bend, Oregon, Costco, the PS3 (80GB) is bundled with Motostorm for the low price of $659. They also have the HD-A2 and the BDSP-301 available for sale. The individual HD-DVD and BD titles for sale ($18.99 each) are identical. Some titles I recollect are Purple Rain, Blood Diamond, Corpse Bride and Dog Day Afternoon...which are all Warner titles.

Why bother doing much of anything at all with the Wii when all retailers have to do is tell people when the next batch of systems are available for sale? Think about it for a second - when was the last time you saw people standing outside a store before it opened for a PS3 that was NOT on launch day? And to boot those people were actually buying that same said PS3 to actually play games or watch Bluray discs?
