Question about Hard Boiled Blu-Ray with Stranglehold

Does anyone know what company is releasing this? Any features or anything?

chase3001 08-19-07 02:11 AM

The game is being released by Activision, and the movie rights are owned by The Weinstein Company. In a way, I guess you could say this is the first Blu-ray released by Weinstein.

Wick 08-19-07 02:35 AM

The inclusion of the Hard Boiled Blu-ray with Stranglehold for the PS3 is the reason I'm going to get it for that console. I've never seen the movie, but I've heard great things. It just sucks that the game is delayed until September 14th, when the 360 version comes out this month.

dyerjp 08-19-07 11:13 AM

are they going to do a seperate release on blu ray for this?

PopcornTreeCt 08-19-07 01:52 PM

Interesting I wonder if this will have the dreaded dub-titles. For those that are thinking about getting this Family Video has it for $59.99 plus there's a $5 coupon floating around.

I want to know that too, please. I imagine that the Weinstein will include the same subtitles that is included on the DD release.

Could people purchasing this game let us know if the movie has the same stretching and dubtitles issues that is present on the DD release?

Anyone see this on kotaku.com?

2. The film can only play/launch on a Sony Playstation 3 game system, not from a dedicated Blu-Ray player. This means a videophile can't buy this for their Blu-Ray player; it's going to be a gamer who is passionate about this SKU.

Is that for real?

PerryD 08-20-07 07:44 AM

If it's contained within the game's menus, it would make sense since it's on the same disc as the game.

True_Story1011 08-20-07 07:58 AM

I've heard its only avalible on the 'collector's edition' version for $74.99 MSRP.

I've talked to 3 different people at 3 different GameStops and they've told me that they were told that this film wasnt going to be in 1080p.

Has anyone confirmed as of yet if this is true?

According to Midway's mktg SVP and CMO Steve Allison, Midway "used the master digital tape from the film print and then ourselves converted it to support all HD resolutions, including 1080p."

I'll confess that I'm not sure what that means.

The linked article does confirm that the movie is only accessible from a PS3 menu and they acquired the rights from the Weinstein Company.

dkny75 08-20-07 01:52 PM

Well I really hopes it looks better than the trailer for the game and movie that I downloaded from the Playstation store. It looks like an upconverted dvd. If that's the case than I think a lot of people will be upset they spent $75 for a horrendous transfer.

Yup, the PS3 CE of the game will be $69.99 in stores.

I am definitely going to pick up the game near release. Going to wait for reviews of the film PQ before I decide what version to pick up.

Supermallet 08-20-07 06:47 PM

Yeah, with Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3 coming out, I won't need to pick up Strangehold until reviews of both versions are up and I can decide whether it's worth the extra money for the movie.

TMNT = Weinstein? Right?

Supermallet 08-20-07 07:53 PM

I think TMNT was a co-production between Weinstein and WB, and WB released the home video versions.

They had a hand in producing TMNT, however Warner has the North American distribution rights.

Has anyone found a review of Stranglehold? More to the point, has anyone read anything on the BD of Hard Boiled? I'm searching....found some reviews of the game only.

The PS3 version with the movie isn't due until the end of the month, so there are no reviews yet.

E Unit 09-12-07 11:40 PM

According to Amazon and the bargain ads for next week, it's slated to release next Tuesday.

http://www.amazon.com/Stranglehold-C...9658220&sr=8-2

- Just noticed the bargain ads do not specify the Collector's Edition. The Best Buy ad for Sept 2-9 shows it being released on XBox 360.

I'm more confused now.....

matome 09-13-07 08:05 AM

The 360 version is out, as I've seen both editions at Best Buy this week.

True_Story1011 09-13-07 11:34 AM

I've got my copy reserved - I'll let the team know as soon as I crack the seal.

E Unit 09-13-07 12:56 PM

Much appreciated. So did you reserve the Collector's Edition for PS3? How much did you get it for? Everywhere seems to be at about $69.99.

I preordered it from familyvideo for $55.98 shipped. The price that they are charging for the collector's edition is $59.99 but there is a $5 off coupon for new members.

True_Story1011 09-28-07 09:52 PM

Yeah tell me how much this sucks!!

Its been pushed back until Oct. 22nd!!

WTF!

This is the second time this games been pushed, I'm not even worried about the game to be honest with you.

I WANT HARD BOILED! lol

FantasticVSDoom 09-28-07 11:11 PM

For fuck sakes, what is the problem this time???

BrandonJF 09-29-07 05:51 PM

I've mentioned this in some other forums, but I would be prepared to be underwhelmed by Hard Boiled on this Stranglehold disc (if it ever comes out).

I keep reading it being referred to as "Hard Boiled on Blu-Ray". Technically, the video file is on a Blu-Ray disc, since it comes with a PS3 game. But, this IS a video file slapped on the disc and accessible from the menu. It isn't like a stand-alone release, where it has to meet some Blu-Ray movie spec. And it isn't the first time it's been done.

While some videogame journalists have "confirmed" it's 1080p, Midway has - unless someone can find somewhere where they stated otherwise - only stated that it SUPPORTS 1080p. And it's in the same sentence where they state that it supports "all resolutions, including 1080p". I have yet to see Midway say it's a 1080p transfer. They said they took the digital master tape and converted it to support all HD resolutions themselves. All of my DVDs "support" 1080p when upconverted.

If I had to guess - and I will - I am betting that by "support" they mean that they will allow the PS3 to upconvert whatever they stick on there so that your display device will read "1080p" if you check while it plays. Given that Midway is apparently behind the "transfer" from the digital master to the Blu-Ray disc, I would not expect much.

Supermallet 09-29-07 08:35 PM

I don't think there's a way to trick the display. I've got video games whose native resolution is 720p, but "support" 1080p, and it reads 720p on my display. Heck, sometimes I get stuff that says it's 1080p, and it actually comes up as 1080i.

theWitcher 10-30-07 09:57 AM

I am interested in anyone's impressions of the possibly HD version of 'Hard Boiled' on the 'Stranglehold' disk.

My Amazon pre-order (from July, I think) apparently won't be fulfilled anytime soon (and I'm a Prime subscriber,) either because they ran out of copies or they never received a shipment. Amazon's typically extraordinarily conservative shipping estimate is 11/27-12/11. (My 'The Shining' BD arrives tomorrow --in time for Halloween!-- when they initially estimated that it would arrive 11/7-11/14.)

I might buy it elsewhere but I'm concerned about the quality of the 'Hard Boiled' presentation and that issues with the Unreal engine on PS3 might result in lousy gameplay for that platform. (I had lots of fun with the PSN 'Stranglehold' demo.)

And if Amazon did run out of copies, I wonder if they will be able to get more of this supposedly limited "collector's edition."

Anyone have opinions?

jiggawhat 10-30-07 02:26 PM

I think compared to some of the other special editions this one might not last simply because of the movie on the disc. It's not some of the usual fluff that's on these so called 'special editions'. The only problem that I see is if the movie's quality is terrible beyond belief then maybe you'll have an easy time getting it from Amazon.

Like you, I'm waiting on hearing the reviews about the movie's quality because I really liked the demo and waited on purchasing the 360 version.

E Unit 10-31-07 08:36 PM

Just checked and my copy shipped from familyvideo today. I have mixed feelings about how it's going to be. At least they finally sent it though.

True_Story1011 10-31-07 09:24 PM

I'm sure in a couple of months your going to find it used for $39.99.

I'm going to wait. After refunding my money because of the length I had to wait for this title especially with it already being out on XB360 for over 2 months now.

I just want the movie.

dullboy 11-07-07 12:07 PM

Someone had this to say about the quality of the Hard Boiled disc on the listing for the Stranglehold CE on Amazon:

Hard Boiled movie not in HD quality., November 2, 2007
By E. NGUYEN (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews

Fun:
I bought the PS3 Stranglehold Collector's Edition because it includes one of my favorite movie Hard Boiled in Blu-ray. The movie is a classic for action lover. I was very disappointed that the movie is only not in HD quality but it look worse than the Dragon Dynasty DVD version. Shame on Sony and Midway.

The game otherwise is a lot of fun to play. 9/10

Hammer99 11-07-07 12:13 PM

I've got it but haven't had a chance to check it out... I'm one firmware upgrade away from the PS3 allowing the disc to load (think it needs 1.93). Once FW 2.0 is out tomorrow, I'll hook up my 20G PS3 on-line & see what it looks like.

True_Story1011 12-13-07 10:40 PM

Sorry about the delay, but review posted here - check it out and let me know what you think. :D

Thanks, great review TS. I got it myself in hopes we'd see something above a DVD transferm but oh well. But the game does rock! It defintitely keeps the tone and feel of the movie.

Robotech_Master 05-19-08 01:38 PM

Just FYI, the Tartan Collector's Edition DVD of Hard-Boiled (with properly translated subtitles, even if it does have the PAL 4% speed up) is available pretty cheaply at amazon.co.uk; just log in with your amazon.com userID and it will have your address and payment information already on-board. It is a PAL disc, not NTSC, but you can get DVD players that will handle that (such as the Phillips DVP-642) for under $50 these days—and if you play through your computer, that's not a problem at all.

Also, the Mei-Ah remastered version is also available cheaply through DDD House, an exporter in Hong Kong. (Remember, US$1 = HK$7.90.) As far as I know, it should be region 0 and play on any US player.

As an added bonus, neither of these films suffer from the crop-and-stretch that dogs DD's Hard-Boiled print. And they're cheap enough you might just want to go ahead and get 'em both! (Though they probably will take a bit of time to cross their respective oceans.)
