Light flicker on 300?
 

Hey all,

I'm watching 300 on my PS3, and during certain scenes, there is a bit of a flicker. Quick flashes of light, it's kind of distracting. Very prevalent for me when Leonidas was telling the [narrator] to tell his story to Sparta.
Anyone else have this?

I am NOT referring to scenes which should flicker, ie: around a fire. Thanks for any input.

No I didn't notice any. Perhaps your eyes are tired or could have early signs of glaucoma? Not trying to be coy just and observation maybe it's your eyes? Same thing, PS3 and BD for me too. No flicker that I can remember.

What kind of display do you have?

I'm using a Samsung 50" 720p TV, watching the movie on my PS3 via HDMI. The PS3 is outputting at 1080p, and my TV is downscaling it, which, in retrospect, may be the problem. I'll output the PS3 at 720p and see what happens.

codenamexen, I believe you'll find that setting the "1080p 24Hz" output to Off, rather than the default Automatic, will solve your flicker issues.

Just out of curiousity, why would you send a 1080p signal if the TV does not support it? Wouldn't it be better to do the native format?

I put the PS3 on 'Automatic' when configuring the HDMI video, and it put it at 1080i (Typo before on 1080p). I never changed it. Laziness :P

However, changing that option did not help me SonNLaw. It might be a part of the DVD, I asked a couple of people I know to look at a couple scenes, and they did not know what I was talking about, but when I pointed it out specifically, they saw what I was talking about. It's very minor, and you pretty much have to look for it to notice.

So, you are watching the DVD version, not the Blu-Ray version? Maybe it is just your keen eye ;)

Ok, that's another typo. I've been saying and typing DVD for so long that I'm still adjusting to calling them Blu-rays, or BD's. I don't even own the DVD version of the film.

Some people have been reporting this at AVS too, and last night I saw it myself. I first watched the BD a couple days ago during the day (i.e. not in a dark room) and didn't notice anything amiss. But last night, in a completely dark room (which is how I usually prefer to watch movies) I rewatched some scenes and noticed the flickering in one particular scene: when Leonidas is talking to King Xercex (I know I murdered the spelling) near the end of the film, during the extreme closeups of Leonidas' face, I could see a light flickering. When I paused and then did a frame step, I noticed the grain structure changed frame by frame, as did the brightness level. It was very slight, but there. But only on the closeups of his face, when the scene changed to another shot, there was no problem. I didn't rewatch the entire film, but definitely noticed it on that scene. Perhaps some people are more sensitive, and the ambiant light may also make it less noticable? (when I first watched the disc in a semi daylit room, I noticed nothing).

I watched the BD on a PS3 connected to a 60" Sony SXRD LCoS 1080p RP set via HDMI. I've never noticed this issue with any other BD.

It seems to me that the cinematographer is out of his budget and so he is being forced to use regular fluoroscent light to light those scenes.

I noticed this on the BD as well, same scene. It wasn't distracting, but it was definately there. I use a PS3 to a JVC 56" LCOS 1080p.
