XBOX 360 HD-DVD add-on sales up 1000% on Amazon

Yes, it probably won't mean much in the grand scheme of things. But it's nice to see it selling well with the $20 price drop and addition of getting the 5 free HD-DVDs promotion.

However, the Playstation 3 was up like 5000% with its price cut.

At least those buying the HD-DVD add-on will definately be buying movies.

Stupid dead format lol

DVD Josh 08-02-07 10:49 AM

The bottom line is that this means that there is an increased interest in the HD formats across the board, and that's a great start.

$20 price drop did it? If you are so poor that a $20 difference for a piece of electronics is the deciding factor then maybe you shouldn't be spending money on this sort of stuff. I'm sure there are more important things that you can barely afford.

stingermck 08-02-07 11:32 AM

$20 cut plus 5 free movies

Not everyone makes as much as you or I.

It's $20. Like I said. If $20 is going to make or break you then how did you afford an HDTV, a 360 and everything else that goes with it?

Yeah Debbie Downers (wah-waaah), please return to the money bin overlooking Duckburg for your refreshing swim amongst gold coins to leave us peasants feeling good about saving $20 bucks and 5 free movies...

The PS3 price cut was also 5 times larger than the 360 add-on price cut (down $100 vs. down $20). Further, the PS3 was overpriced from the start, and many people were waiting for a price cut before jumping in. The 360 add-on has always been affordable (for existing 360 owners).

DJ_Longfellow 08-02-07 12:23 PM

I think the price cut and 5 movies are a nice enticement. For all you with TOO much money, please send me $20 and/or 5 movies :D

I think the 5 free movies are more of an incentive to buy than the price cut. If you are able to get a drive with King Kong packaged, that's 6 free HD DVDs and a player for $180. Not a bad way to jump into the world of HD on a minimal investment.

And as to the $20 is nothing argument - thats a 10% discount. Thats $20 that could be used to purchase yet another HD DVD. Don't confuse a savy shopper as someone "not being able to afford" an electronics product. I didn't pay anywhere near retail for my HDTV, my 360, my sound equipment or ANY OF MY MOVIES.

Some of the most "well off" people I've ever known were some of the tightest folks I've ever met, and I'm pretty sure they didn't get the way they are by frivolously pissing away 20 bucks here and there. They were smart with their money and often looked for deals.

Now, I may have missed the part where someone said that $20 was going to make or break their budget, but (as pointed out several times above) . . . I'll bet the 5 free movies helped convince some folks to order the drive.

It's out of line to assume that the people ordering these players are too poor for HiDef. It seems to me that they've been curious for a while and a $150 in free movies along with a $20 discount on a $199 player was just what it took to get them to pull the trigger.

So I don't think it's like they saved 20 bucks . . . I think it's more like they're saving $170 dollars on a $200 player.

EDIT: Good call on the King Kong disc Jack, I forgot about that one!

sbelli 08-02-07 12:43 PM

I think it is the 5 free HD-DVDs that are more of an enticement. This has been going on for Toshiba's but not for the 360 add-on. Now, you spend $179 (it's actually on sale for $149 at Best Buy) and you get 6 HD-DVDs worth at least $120 and you're essentially only paying $59 for an HD-DVD player.

No you are spending $179 on a player and now you have 5 movies That you wouldn't have bought other wise. If you choose to sell them on ebay you aren't going to get $20 a piece for them.

"Poor" was poor choice of words. More like priorities. My point is if you really want something would $20 stand in the way? That is if you didn't need the extra $20 to pay bills, food, to live etc. $30 or $50 would stop me but not $20. Look at how many crappy games, music, movies, etc you have wasted $20 or more on.

You're making a HUGE assumption in thinking that $20 was standing in someone's way from purchasing this. As stated several times, the 5 free movies is the major incentive here (the 5 free "crappy" movies, as you so elegantly put it in another thread). You're making an even bigger assumption in thinking that because someone doesn't turn their nose up at $20 that they can't pay their bills or purchase necessities.

So let me get this straight, $30 would stop you from purchasing something, but not $20? How about $26? $29? The fact that the $10 difference between $20 and $30 is the difference between a deal breaker or not to you is pretty funny.

And by the way, I'm not in the habit of "wasting" $20 on crappy games, music or movies. Sorry if you are, but since $20 is pocket change to you... not too sorry.

Nope, it won't. But it's the free movies that are atrracting the consumers. If it went down to $180 without the free movies, I doubt the sales increase will be 1000%.

Come on I'm sure you bought stuff that you have regretted and seemed like a waste of money after the fact. We all do it. And I'm not turning my nose up at $20. I'm saying if you can afford to be in this game where you are spending $1000's on TV's equipment, systems, games, then what's $20. My point is it's silly for someone that has a $1500 TV and a $300 Xbox to bitch about paying $20 extra to utilize all that expensive hardware.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the subject. Peace.

My beef with the add on is that it doesn't do lossless audio and it is a piece of junk. I couldn't have returned it faster and picked up a much better piece of equipment in the a20.

matrixrok9 08-02-07 02:10 PM

that's true. i'd rather get the a-2 for an extra $50 or so.

I agree. $20 is not alot of money when talking about an electronics device that produces high-definition content. If Microsoft had cut the price down $50 to $149 and didn't offer the free movies, then I think we'd still see a huge increase. I think the free movies are what is driving the sales increase.

Of course, what some of these new owners don't realize is it may take months before their free movies show up.

I'd don't think I'd go so far to say it's a piece of junk. The drive is made by Toshiba just like the stand alone units. Sure it doesn't have the nice black piano finish but the video and audio quality is very good.

The fact it doesn't have lossless audio is a limitation of the 360, not the add-on.

I wish I did the same. Mine just died after only 7 monthes of extremely light usage. It can play regular dvd's fine but locks on every single HD-DVD with a "Can't connect to hd dvd drive" message.

With the whole audio fiasco and now this, I am officially abandoning HD-DVD. Maybe I'll pick up a PS3 once some better games come out for it and switch to BD.
