Any problems connecting PS3 to DVI display?

I'm contemplating buying a PS3 as a BR player but my TV has the older DVI input and not HDMI. Am I correct in assuming all I need to do is buy a conversion cable to convert the HDMI signal to DVI for the TV? Anybody experience any problems with that I should be aware of before shelling out the money for a PS3? Also, what sound output options do I have with a PS3? My receiver can decode digital sound and has an optical port as well. I know my equipment is a tad out of date but I'm pretty satisfied with what I have and would like to get some more use out of it. I currently have an OPPO OPDV971H with DVI which upconverts nicely. Also, I would appreciate any recommendation on what HDMI->DVI cable would be appropriate. TIA.

My Dad currently uses this setup on a Sony GWIII RPLCD TV. He uses a monoprice HDMI to DVI adapter with his Monster DVI cable he bought a few years ago. I'm sure monoprice sells quality HDMI > DVI cables as well. Via the optical port (digital toslink) I believe the PS3 can send Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2.0 PCM.

As far as I know, he has had zero issues with this setup to date.

Good luck,
NMR

I have an DVI input and an HDMI to DVI cable, and have had no issues with either my PS3 or my Toshiba A1

I've had problems getting the video to display when connecting my PS3 to my Aquos, through HDMI, but I haven't tried DVI.

Define problems. I had trouble with Blu-ray movies when I first setup my PS3. Everything else would display fine (games, standard DVDs), but any time I tried to watch a Blu-ray movie my Samsung 40in 1080p would go back to "Searching for Signal". Turns out my problem was a certain setting under Blu-ray playback. I think the setting was something about automatically converting 24(fps?)something signals. I can't remember off the top of my head. Once I turned that off, Blu-ray discs played fine.

I bought a Monster HDMI cable when I got my TV and, when I tried to hook my Playstation 3 up with it, I only got the audio. The screen would be black and no matter what I did (I tried to reset the system, since I had had it hooked up with component cables and I also tried to go into the options to change it to HDMI,) I still couldn't get the video to come up.

I'm still having the same problem. But, my XBOX 360 Elite is hooked up through HDMI and it works fine.

I am pretty sure it does. It's a JVC AV-56WP74 model RP TV. The manual says it will accept digital content from a HDCP high def source. The manual also says the DVI port is for use in the "future". Maybe my TV is older than I thought. Plasma displays are becoming very affordable now and I'm sure I'll upgrade in the next couple of years. With Kubrick and Blade Runner hitting Blu Ray soon, I'd like to have access to Blu Ray now.

I really appreciate all the helpful replies from all.

Did you go through the settings to set the PS3's display to HDMI? I had problems getting it to work too, and had to try it a couple of times in order to get it to work.

Yeah; I unplugged the HDMI cable and then hooked it back up through component. I changed the settings to HDMI, plugged that back in, and it still didn't work. All I got was audio.
