Got the same e-mail today. :( Going to be pretty upset if one of my only anticipated releases gets shuffled off into who-knows-when. Why can't this kind of thing happen to any of the numerous crap releases instead?

HumanMedia 06-25-08 12:11 AM

And I got the same.

But, talking with some people over on a UK forum the ITV releases have shipped and are in stock and selling at bricks-and-mortar stores. So maybe its just a delay to their largest single customer (Amazon UK).

Since the releases are real and out there it shouldnt take too long (fingers crossed).

Cosmic Bus 06-25-08 10:24 AM

Amazon has now sent an e-mail with an expected July 11th - July 25th delivery for Black Narcissus, although it hasn't been shipped to me yet. Hmm.

Paul_SD 06-25-08 11:30 AM

...and it's been reviewed

www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=68122

although after reading that, I may start looking for the French sd edition. I don't regret selling off my Criterion copy, as it was full of artifacts and far below the state of the art for even sd-but I miss not having this in my collection..
Ironically I cancelled my order with Amazon last week because I was spending too much in the DD sale (on impulse buys like the Rohmer set) and now it seems they've jacked the price up £5 (almost $10).
Guess I'll just wait now for the Beaver review on this.

Funny, but I was really only lukewarm on the Rohmer set before, but rabidly anticipating this. Now I'm starting to feel genuine disappoinment not getting that set.

dkny75 06-25-08 12:27 PM

Has anyone picked up the Korean BDs of Taegukgi and Welcome to Dongmakgool yet?

I have the French set and actually reviewed it for TALK. It is indeed marvelous and if fluent in French offering a wealth of beautiful extras (booklet). I wholeheartedly recommend it.

For those reading the DVD Times review, I'd like to draw your attention to this article over at the Bits, which perhaps casts a bit of doubt on the astuteness of that review.

Waiting for Taegukgi fm DDDHouse...hoping it would have the same features as the R3 or even R1 dvd. Didn't pick up Dongmakgool as I also have the R3 dvd of this and found the film a little too preachy.

That's an interesting article about grain and DNR, but how does it relate to the DVD Times review of "Black Narcissus"? I may be missing something obvious, but please explain. :)

HumanMedia 06-26-08 12:59 AM

And now hours after the rest of my order shipped, with Black Narcissus being delayed 2 weeks, Black Narcissus has shipped as well ?!

This is from Amazon UK.

I think it is the reviewers comment that the Blu-ray looked grainier than the DVD release, or that the DVD dealt with the grain better (rolls eyes)

Where did you find the blu-ray versions on DDDHouse? I looked and I couldn't find them anywhere.

I think he ment... Hes waiting for them to have it in stock and add it to their site.

as for an impression on the disc... This is what a person had to say on Hidefdigest

The colors were slightly muted as gritty, as is typical for war movies. There was no noticeable grain even in the darker scenes though which made me feel there may have been some grain removal processing involved. I wouldn't be able to say for sure though as I haven't seen this movie in a theatre, I just have a Korean DVD of it somewhere and I last watched it several years ago. It looked pretty eye-pleasing and nice all through, without any noticeable artifacts. The level of detail / sharpness was not as great as with some "reference quality" discs, the picture never looked extremely sharp to the point of making a special impression, but it was pretty decent and fully met my expectations.

The AQ felt excellent, lots of effective use of surrounds especially in the battle scenes. Even in my limited optical setup the DTS core sound was pretty much perfect.

The movie itself was of course 5 out of 5 again :) I really like this one, even though it gets a bit over the top (but in a good way).

And the extras seem to be
SD Trailer + some commentary audio tracks in Korean + a track for visually impaired

OMG...so sorry. I meant YesAsia. I ordered Taegukgi fm YesAsia & ordered Perhaps Love & Assembly fm DDDHouse on the same day so I got both mixed up.

Exactly - if the reviewer thinks that the removal of grain is a good thing and that a blu-ray with it is a bad transfer/authoring/whatever, then the whole of the review is called into question.

If the reviewer believes that applying DNR to remove grain, thus affecting the integrity of the original source, is a good idea then the reviewer should not be reviewing BR discs!!

I am sorry to come off so harsh on the gentleman but an HD transfer should not correct what is present on the master negative. An HD transfer should replicate, as much as technically possible, what is already on the master negative.

Any attempt to evade the above thought-process simply negates everything HD stands for.

I'm guessing that some of you may have already heard the news, but Tartan went into receivership this morning, laying of all 22 staff. Apparently it is business as usual from a catalogue point of view, but I have no idea whether this will impact on new releases. More news is promised next week.

Richard Malloy 06-27-08 12:03 PM

Tartan-UK?

Cardiac161 06-27-08 12:41 PM

I believe he meant Tartan US as Tartan UK is still going strong. I really hope that their BD releases of Lady Vengeance & A Tale of Two Sisters are not region coded.

UPDATED: Sorry, I just read that Tartan UK is also gone!!!

bunkaroo 06-27-08 01:11 PM

Damn, now I'm really glad The Proposition was announced for the US.

Yeah, they are both part of the same company as far as I know...

Tartan USA was bought out by another company a couple of weeks ago and all the tartan titles will eventually be released under the new name in the USA.

But i hadn't heard anything about Tartan UK...

Dan Average 06-29-08 02:33 AM

AFAIK Palisades Pictures (the company that picked up Tartan USA's holdings) have yet to announce their plans for the old Tartan library. No doubt they'll reissue some titles, but I would be shocked if "all" of them make it back into print.

Does anyone own [REC] or Roman de Gare, yet?
