Anyone know why Heroes is on HD-DVD but not Blu-Ray??

I wouldve guessed that it would be on both or just on blu-ray given the disc sales?!

JustinW 06-22-07 07:21 PM

Heroes is from Universal.. and Universal is HD DVD only

rq42 06-22-07 07:23 PM

aaahhh man, that sucks! kinda ruins it for people without a HD-DVD player such as myself, all i got is standard DVD and Blu-ray/PS3.... working on getting a stand-alone BR player soon.

i guess this means theres no chance of a blu-ray set in the near future then?

JustinW 06-22-07 07:34 PM

Nope..

I sold my Oppo and bought an A2 mainly for Heroes in mind..

rq42 06-22-07 07:59 PM

then again, i guess there's always those "both format players" that have popped up recently.... man, why cant there be a winner already? down with HD-DVD!!.........*sigh*........ i hate this.......

dsa_shea 06-22-07 08:03 PM

You will eventually see Heroes on Blu-ray if I had to guess. There is just too much money to be made for them to turn down its eventual Blu-ray release. Not everyone is going to buy both players or one over the over-priced hybrid players to view both types of HD releases.

QuePaso 06-22-07 08:34 PM

I wouldnt be too concerned. Be patient and you will likely see Heroes in a blue case soon enough.

Stop yourself from buying the standalone BD player and get and HD one - the best of both worlds!

I have a PS3 to handle my BD needs, and it works well.

Yeah, that is what I was going to suggest. From what everyone says, the PS3 is a capable enough BR player, so why not just get an HD DVD player since you want to see Heroes in HD so bad? It's cheaper anyways.

BLASPHEMY!! :) To answer your question (as others have) I doubt you will see Heroes on BD anytime soon (or later). Universal is 100% HD DVD and has members on the HD DVD board. Universal is that 800lb gorilla with their current and backlog of titles that can potentially be released on HD DVD. They are second to none. As others have said, come over to the other side and just get a stand alone HD DVD player. It would be MUCH cheaper and you could go neutral while still getting that season 1 of Heroes you want.

Viva La HD DVD!

re; Anyone know why Heroes is on HD-DVD but not Blu-Ray??

Because Blu-Ray sucks? :p

Seriously though...I have yet to dunk myself in the waters of Hi-Definition. I'm a lover, not a fighter, so this whole Blu-Ray/HD-DVD fracas is really annoying to me. Especially if a particular studio stands behind only one format (Disney/Blu-Ray - Universal/HD-DVD).

Can't we all just get along?

and wouldn't there be more $$$ made if more formats were available?

That certainly seems to be Warner's contention. They're the only studio to crack 100,000 copies of a single movie title, and that was only by releasing on both formats.

speedyray 06-23-07 11:53 AM

Heroes will not be on BD anytime soon so don't kid yourself thinking it might. Complaining that it should be on BD is no different than HD DVD people complaining the Pirates of the Caribbean should be on HD DVD. If all the studios were on both formats one format would already be dead, but that is just not the case and will not be anytime soon. Universal has enough movies to out release Disney, Fox, Lionsgate and Buena Vista combined unless those studios dig hard, so just get an HD DVD player since they are quite affordable and enjoy. There is zero reason to get a standalone BD player if you have a PS3. Wait until at least BD 1.1 is finalized and players are compliant before getting a standalone.

Perfectly said!

Cluttering my tv stand with another component for a few hundred bucks more is not what I want to do. I know there are a few tv shows and movies only on HD that I would like but just not enough to sway me to drop even more cash on yet another player. Ultimately if Universal wants to stay with HD only then there is the alternative SD release that will most likely be a nice release in itself. The show I really want on HD is LOST and we all know which platform that will ultimately end up on when the decide to release it.

matome 06-23-07 07:13 PM

^Yep, I see no need to add more components and complexity to my systems just to watch movies from one studio, which may or may not release on Blu-Ray in the future. Not worth it to me.

rq42 06-23-07 08:48 PM

Thanks to everyone for their advice.... I guess a HD-DVD player is the most sensible option, cheers!

universal have a great name but a poor recent track record at the box office. since new titles perform far better than catalogue in ht sales this has to be somewhat worrying for this studio. as to catalogue, their list is less extensive than is sometimes reported, with half comprising of pre1920 silent pictures.

buying a player for one title seems a little extreme to me, but that's just my perspective.

Lost is not coming out on BLU anymore, Disney cancelled it.

Technically, they denied that it was ever announced, but also did so with Bad Santa, which was later re-announced. I have a feeling that Lost Season 3 is in the works, and they just weren't ready to go public with it yet.

Very true. However I don't see why they wouldn't announce it now and reap in the huge Blu-Ray PR with the 'We won the Format War with Lost' stuff. They seem to only do that once a month I guess.

dsa_shea 06-25-07 12:33 PM

I would like to see LOST on Blu-ray but if it doesn't happen it won't ruin my day. However, I am sure it will eventually be announced. Seeing Heroes on HD would be nice, but as I stated before I'm not willing to fork over another 300 dollars or so for another component for just a few titles that I want.

... I feel exactly the same about buying a PS3. :D ;)

However, it is hard to compare something that is purely designed to play shows to something that is more of an all around media center. If you like games then the PS3 (or Xbotch) is the way to go. But if you're in it strictly for HD then a standalone player is your best bet. When I look at the PS2 and realize that it was 300 when it came out I understand just how much you get with the PS3 and its value. To each his own.
