The Matrix Trilogy on HDDVD and Blu-Ray with the new AACS has been cracked
 

It didn't take long for the hackers to figure it out did it? From the article at engadget

Just in case you didn't already piece it together, many (if not all) of the new HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc titles set for release on May 22nd will feature the latest revisions to AACS. Right, the update hinted at by those forced user updates to the WinDVD and PowerDVD software. Yeah, well no worries... it's cracked. That's right, a week before the disks have even hit the shops, the kids over at Slysoft have already released AnyDVD HD 6.1.5.1 (beta) which kicks AACS MKB v3 swiftly to the curb. Thus you can continue to rip all your newly purchased HD DVD and BD flicks for playback any damn way you like. The update has already been demonstrated to work with an early-shipped release of The Matrix Trilogy on HD DVD and will likely work for Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest when it arrives on Blu-ray.

Well, I guess that means Fox will officially back completely out of Blu-ray now and refrain from High Definition altogether.

If FOX honestly expects someone to come up with software based copy protection that can't be cracked, they will be waiting forever.

If it's software based, there are thousands of eager little hackers out there just chomping at the bit for their next challenge. It WILL be cracked. Period. It's just a matter of how long it takes for them to do it.

Do we even know they've backed out because of security reasons? Could it be that they just don't think the limited user base justifies releasing their titles?

They were definitely holding back on releases awaiting the new AACS security. Who knows what they'll do now.

I'm a little confused about AACS and BD+. Are these separate DRM implementations? I thought Fox was waiting, supposedly, on BD+.

Why don't they just hire the kids that are breaking the codes to code new protection for the format. I mean whatever they come up with just gets broken by these guys anyway.

They would never be able to hire them all.

Meh, they are just spinning their wheels with all this protection. I don't think there are that many people out there with the computer savvy to rip & burn them... at least it's a small % compared to the total buying public. I think they'd be better off devoting more resources to catch those that are trying to make $$$ from pirated copies.

Yeah, I thought that Fox might have been waiting for BD+ too. Well, if they weren't, they probably are now (not like that wouldn't eventually be cracked either).

Well, there goes any reason to stick solely with BD. Hopefully Murdoch will just say "fuck it then" and release on both formats! Wishful thinking I know!
