Planet Earth

The first two episodes of this Discovery miniseries have been spectacular.

The standard dvd is available for pre-order on their website, anybody hear anything on it being released in HD?

Fandango 03-25-07 08:57 PM

Yes, it will be released on hd-dvd and bluray on 4/24. Amazon has them for pre-order.

Th0r S1mpson 03-25-07 08:58 PM

Watched today... I'll save these on my DVR for a while. Man, what incredible stuff.

Overpar 03-25-07 09:01 PM

^^^^ I agree. It is awesome! It will be a definite purchase for me.

Th0r S1mpson 03-25-07 09:04 PM

Also, a correction... it was 3 episodes today. I'm watching the third now.

Pre-ordered my HD DVD copy on Amazon. Great stuff.

edstein 03-25-07 10:32 PM

The first three episodes were great. Bring on the rest.

maingon 03-25-07 10:41 PM

i watched the first 2 and gonna wait to watch the rest when the HD-DVD comes out

redrum 03-25-07 10:42 PM

good thing they are coming out on hd-dvd.

slop101 03-26-07 10:07 AM

Ack.
The HDdvd will have none of the extras that the SD dvd will have - that, and they're about $20 more expensive. With shenanigans like this, it's no wonder these new formats aren't taking off.

The BBC America store lists the HDDVD as 4-Disc with a 9hr running time but the BluRay as 5-Disc with 13 1/2 hr running time.

Blu-ray link

Does anyone know if this is correct, is the HDDVD missing something?? I had it preordered but might have to think again!!

NMA 03-26-07 11:42 AM

When you click on "View More Photos" link under the picture on BBC Store pages, both of the enlarged front covers state "4 Disc Set" on the bottom left corner.

edstein 03-26-07 11:59 AM

Both blu-ray and hd-dvd versions are $69.95 at amazon available for pre-order.

RockStrongo 03-26-07 12:27 PM

I preordered the HD-DVD version. Loved the shows last night. New demo material!

Ill get the sd extras from blockbuster, netflix or another way if needed. ;)

RockStrongo 03-26-07 12:34 PM

BTW - Anyone know the specs for this release? I dont see them on amazon or dvdplanet.

Hubcap 03-26-07 04:09 PM

will not purchase unless the HD-DVD set gets the extra footage like the regular dvd set. Pretty disapointed if this is true.

Th0r S1mpson 03-26-07 05:24 PM

I think the complete Amazon description says it has 1.5 hours not seen on the Discovery Channel.

AFAIK the specs for the BD/HD are the same, they will have only David Attenborough as narrator, and won't have the 11min extra material after each episode (don't ask me why). They also won't offer the BD/HD sets the 3hr+ documentary material provided with the SD-DVD set, so both HD/BD sets should be only 4 Discs, even though we're paying $20+ more than the SD set.

I personally would complain to Warner about not providing the extra material, even on SD-DVD (there's no reason they cannot just throw the disc in there) considering we're paying more for it, if I could figure out who to complain to.
