HDMI and HDCP Question
 

If I get a receiver with HDMI 1.1 will it be able to pass through a signal from a PS3? A friend of mine just recently got a receiver and he said that he couldn't pass his TV signal through it using HDMI because it is not HDCP compliant. He got sound, but it wouldn't pass the video on to his TV. Would I have this same problem playing Blu-Ray discs on a PS3? Should I wait for newer models to come out with 1.2a or 1.3?

After a quick trip to the Denon website, I can confirm that this receiver is HDCP compliant. As long as your display is ALSO compliant, you should have no trouble.

As for the HDMI 1.1 or 1.3 issue, since the PS3 is supposed to be able to decode advanced audio codecs internally and then pass them as if they were 5.1 PCM through its HDMI port, a 1.1 capable receiver is entirely sufficient. As I understand it, a 1.3 receiver would only be necessary if the PS3 was merely passing the codec WITHOUT decoding it. Same thing applies with the HD-DVD players.

Don't just take my word for it, though. I recommend doing a search or two on this forum for more info on HDMI versions and on that receiver, specifically. I think I remember it having been mentioned a time or two . . .

Too bad for your friend, though! Is it his TV that's non-compliant?

I understand about the audio formats and I know they won't be a problem (for the PS3 at least) thanks to the PS3 thread here. His receiver is not the same as the one I posted above. I'm not sure of the model # of it. If the issue were his TV, wouldn't he of had the same problem if he went straight to it with HDMI?

Yes, I think so. You say it's the TV signal, though? As in HD channels? If that's the case, could it be that neither his source or his TV are HDCP compliant, but the receiver is, and, when placed in between the two, it interferes with the video signal to his non-compliant display? Just hypothesizing -- of course you know his situation and I don't.

HDMI and HDCP go hand in hand. There's no such thing as an HDMI connection that isn't HDCP compliant.

DVI is the only connection type that's sometimes HDCP compliant and sometimes not.

It's possible it was something else, like the receiver not being able to pass 1080p (some only go up to 1080i).
