PS3 Fan Noise

Recently bought a PS3 60G and it's been great except one thing concerning the fan noise:

When playing any blu-ray movie, for the first 30 minutes or so the fan is quiet. After 30 minutes the fan gets louder and louder and at the hour mark it's so loud I can hear the fan over the quiet scenes. I have the PS3 horizontal with plenty of air circulation.

Is anyone else having this issue of the fan getting louder? Any solutions?

It's loud no matter how you cut it.

No noise issues here. My 360 is a noisy bastard, but my PS3 is totally quiet.

Do you have a PS3 or have seen one in action and I don't mean at the store. I cannot hear the fan on mine at all. Do you have yours laying on the carpet?

no.

Mine doesn't make much noise at all.

speedyray 02-22-07 08:05 PM

Mine is loud, but I consider most stuff loud. I hear strange things from electronics most don't seem to notice though. I will say the A1 is just as noisey as the PS3 but neither come close to a LD player IMHO.

UncleCaveman 02-22-07 08:51 PM

My 360 sounds like a meat grinder. I can't hear the Ps3 at all. I am an hour and a half into the prestige, as i post this. Take your Ps3 back.

Supermallet 02-22-07 09:04 PM

Mine is pretty darn quiet.

Mine is very quiet as well. My 360 sound like a jet taking off though.

Hank1215 02-23-07 02:45 AM

No fan noise problems from my PS3. I did put my Xbox inside my stereo cabinet to cut down on it's fan noise however.

Noonan 02-23-07 07:21 AM

I'm the same as everyone else. My 360 sounds like a turbine engine and my PS3 can't be heard even in a dead silent room.

BravesMG 02-23-07 09:41 AM

Yup, I'm also in agreement with most. The PS3 is my quietest component by far, with the 360 being pretty loud, but the fan is easily overwhelmed if there's any kind of sound going on. It's just somewhat annoying during quiet scenes or low dialog.

I feel like mine is the same way. I only play Blu-Ray movies, but I have felt the fan gets really loud. I also have a 360 right next to it and the ps3 gets just as loud for me.

It is? :hscratch: I thought it was quiet, the quietest of all the systems, in fact.

flashburn 02-25-07 07:05 PM

Mine is whisper quiet. Easily one of the quietest components I own. Actually, I don't hear it at all when it is running.

Goldblum 02-25-07 08:47 PM

Okay, that's what I thought. DFNYC must have been thinking of the 360.

Davy Mack 02-26-07 02:21 AM

The only time I hear mine is right after I turn it off. Fan picks up for about 5-10 secs.
Other than that I NEVER hear it and it's on a shelf 2 feet from my head.

cultshock 02-26-07 11:50 AM

It must depend on the unit. My PS3 isn't loud by any means, but I can certainly hear the fan if I'm close to it. But if I'm sitting in my normal position of about 10 feet away and playing a movie, I really don't hear it at all (and I have good ears), unless I'm intentionally trying to listen for it during dead quiet scenes.

samper 02-26-07 01:24 PM

I also noticed that my 20GB PS3 gets extra hot while watching a DVD. Especially the side of the DVD player. Warrying actually.

cultshock 02-26-07 06:42 PM

Mine gets warm, not hot, on that side after it's been on for awhile. Not sure if that's normal or not. According to the manual, if the internal temp reaches a certain above normal level, the green and red lights on the front will flash alternately and if it gets too hot, the machine will shut itself off. I'm assuming that as long as that isn't happening to my system, it's ok?

bdshort 02-26-07 10:08 PM

I think the fan on my TV is louder than my PS3... that thing is really quiet. Mine is vertical on the floor, BTW.

Wick 02-28-07 12:50 AM

I use the 360 Add-on HD-DVD player for HD-DVDs, and it can be a little annoying with the sound from the 360's fan, as it's quite loud.

I just bought a PS3, but I haven't opened it yet (still deciding on whether it was a good purchase at the moment,) so I've yet to watch any Blu-ray discs.

Are you sure it's not your neighbor's Xbox360? I kid, I kid! My PS3 is super quiet -you might want to take yours back, or check to see if something's obstructing airflow.
