Format War: Where are you now?
#52
I heard my name mentioned, so I'll chime in.
Currently, I'm HD DVD only. I have supported the format since its launch in April '06, mainly due to Universal's exclusive catalog. I owned BD a few months ago and was impressed with what I saw. A month or so ago, I made the mistake of getting rid of my standalone Sammy BD-P1000 unit and replace it with a PS3. Unfortunately for my case, the unit loved leaving scratch marks on my discs when they were ejected. And yes, the unit was flat. I don't stand electronic items on their sides.
So.....after being completely pissed off, I ditched the unit and the format. I've been very disgusted lately with the whole ordeal and the dickheads at AVS don't make matters any better with their childish bickering.
My dvd buying has increased alot lately, and upconverted dvd through the A1 still looks damn good. I've bought 2 HD DVD's in the past 2 months (Poseidon, The Departed). That's not many. If Universal announced BD support tomorrow, I'd dump HD DVD and stick with BD.
However, it appears they will stay exclusive this year, so the A1 will remain in my possession.
If I had to do it over again, I would have not jumped in to either format and just waited it out. But I'm in, so I'll stick around. What's making matters worse, is BD has a great release schedule in the coming months. And that spiffy Samsung BD-P1200 with its HQV processor is almost here. Unless I can fight the urge, and I know I can't, I'll make it to BD, round 2 and purchase the 1200.
The PS3 issue may just have affected me, but it's enough to realize I don't want a gaming system playing my movies. And it also reminded me why I hate slot loading devices.
My biggest gripe with BD is all extras aren't ported over and the hardware is still expensive. Why can't we have a BD standalone for $399?
But I can live with a disc sans extras, as long as it has a PCM track and a kick ass transfer.
For HD on disc to succeed, one of these formats has to fail. If I had to choose right now on who the winner would be, I'd pick BD. The facts are the same. They still have much, much more studio and manufacturer support than HD DVD. And it looks as though the PS3 is playing a factor as it appears momentum has shifted to the blu side. The Lions Gate and Disney rumors turned out to be complete bullshit. How long can Universal carry the burden for HD DVD? It's been almost a year, and it's still Universal vs Sony, Fox, Disney, Lionsgate (yeah, I'm including 'em).

I'm both, but lean more towards HD DVD. I like knowing I'm getting a decent amount in return for the money spent, and HD DVD wipes the floor with Blu-ray in that area. $27.95 for a catalog title and no real extras? (in a Gob voice) Come on!

I think it's very telling that since this poll was posted about 9 hours ago, less than 100 people responded to it on a forum that has a large base of DVD and Home Theatre enthusiasts.
There's a war going on, and nobody knows or cares. Can you say "niche market" ?

As of right now, I don't support neither. By the end of the month, I will be moving in my new house with a brand new 52 inch HDTV. My XB360 HD add on drive is on order, so I plan to start my next-gen buying with HD-DVD. Casino, Goodfellas, and The Departed are my first 3 films I plan on getting.
Once more games come out, I will bite the bullet and pick up a 20 gig PS3, which I've heard is also a very good Blu-Ray player.

Proof that this site has a discernible HD-DVD bias!
Xbox 360 with HD-DVD addon the day it came out. Haven't bought a single HD-DVD (save for the included King Kong, I've got Blockbuster for rentals). I'll buy the DVE disk that includes the standard DVD side and I'll buy LOTR on anything when it comes out because I'm an incredible nerd when it comes to that particular trilogy.
Back when the HD wars were just in the making I was firmly behind Blu-Ray. As the Playstation 3 developed and Blu-Ray obviously was experiencing problems I started to actually think about the situation. Once I read over the finalized specs I really couldn't stand by my previous position. While Blu-Ray is technically superior, the differences turn out to be barely perceptible (when the Blu-Ray releases are done properly).
Interesting to see that among the enthusiasts here HD-DVD is obviously ahead, but in the actual market we're seeing the less technically proficient buyers put Blu-Ray ahead in several benchmarks. I'm inclined to write it off to the PS3 effect, but that's not doing spectacularly well - although it probably does put Blu-Ray ahead for in-home players. I'd love to see Blockbuster/Netflix rental stats.
Oh well. HD-DVD for me, for now. Seems like the HD-DVD groups could be doing a lot better getting their movies and their superior standing out there more forcefully - but time will tell.
Also, first post - although I could swear I had registered on this site years ago. I've definitely been reading here for years.

I own both, honestly, kind of wish I had just skipped BD. Expensive discs and overwhelming lack of extras on many discs combined with being forced to get a PS3 to get in my budget (no analog outs) I am underwhelmed with BD for my money outlay.
I love HD-DVD. Just wish I had more studio support on it.

100% behind Blu-ray!
I've played over 40 BDs in my PS3 and all came back in the condition they went in as... minty fresh!

I have had HD DVD since the first month it came out, but I plan on picking up a BD 2nd gen player when they are available. In anticipatation of that, I already bought 10 BD movies.

Yes, there's a clear HD DVD bias on this forum. Just as there are biases towards BD on other sites. AVS has certainly started to tilt that way again, and HTF has been that way for a while now. AVS remains the best source of info on this format kerfuffle.

I'm sitting this one out. I likely won't be getting either format until the players are cheap (under, say, $150) and I can walk into Wal-Mart or Target and buy the discs for under $10. I really don't trust either format until the technology has matured. Though I am watching both formats with a great deal of interest. (So, no, I'm not here because I got lost.)
My Top Ten List.
10) I don't want to get stuck with a library full of expensive software for a dead format.
9) I don't want to get stuck with expensive hardware that won't work with future discs. There's still some uncertainty about triple-layer discs.
8) Not enough software that I'm interested in. Blu-Ray, in particular, has been releasing some pretty underwhelming things of late. One title that I would be interested in, Robocop, isn't even the uncut version. I'm pretty selective in my movie-buying and there really aren't a whole lot of hi-def releases that I would even want. Maybe six or seven that I've seen.
7) I'm addicted to cheap DVDs. At this point, I'd rather spend $5 on a DVD instead of $30 on a hi-def disc.
6) We're going to be building a house (with a dedicated HT, no less) and I don't really have any desire to sink a lot of money into a risky format. It would be nice to be able to watch hi-def discs in my new home theater, but I can wait it out. (Of course, by the time the house is built, enough conditions might be met for me to take the plunge.)
5) The format war. No end in sight. Ideally, it would be settled by inexpensive dual-format players.
4) I might be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby.
3) I'm saving my money to buy Britney Spears some underwear.
2) My televisions all look purple and distorted since Desmond turned the key.
1) SelectaVision is good enough for me!

The signal-to-noise ratio there is so poor that it ceases to be a ratio. I'd rather just wait the extra few minutes for someone to post that same news on a more rational forum.
No one there could care less about movies. It's all about showing off their home theaters and championing "their" side of the format war, whichever one that happens to be. No intelligent, rational discussion -- just format cheerleading.
I'm interested in title announcements more than anything else, and that news usually seems to come from other sites anyway.

Josh-da-man, I don't think #4 would be that much of a problem. Although you'd have the increased duties of raising the girl and dealing with legal issues, you could be in line for a ton of money to buy discs.

As of last weekend I'm format-neutral. I picked up the Samsung Blu-ray player using some discount coupons and reward zone bucks at BB when they had their "get 2 free movies with the player" deal of the week. Under $750 and I got Reservoir Dogs, Crash and Memento to start the library.
I've had the HD-A1 since August and find it to be an excellent all-around player, apart from the load times on HD content. It blows my old Samsung upconverting DVD player out of the water for quality in that regard (though I have that kicking around for other region/PAL use... I tell you, if I didn't have the harmony remote I'd go nuts trying to change inputs).
I'm still biased a bit towards HD DVD... going to pick up The Departed today on that format rather than Blu, mainly because it's cheaper... but also picking up Hollywoodland (HD DVD only) and The Usual Suspects (Blu only).
So there you have it...
