Likelihood of These Catalog Titles Coming to Blu?

A while back my prized DVD collection was ransacked. (On a separate note, I live in a much more secure place) Anyway, I've replaced the big titles of my collection with their available Blu ray counterparts, since I now have a Blu ray player and an HDTV. Still there are a lot of smaller titles still missing, and I'm wondering if I should hold out and wait for them to be released on a BD format, or bite the bullet and just re-buy them on DVD.

Here are the titles:

1984
25th Hour
American Splendor
Art School Confidential
Auntie Mame
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Death to Smoochy
Defending Your Life
Earth Girls are Easy
Ed Wood
Harry & Tonto
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Idiocracy
The Iron Giant
Man of La Mancha
Man on the Moon (1999)
Mallrats
Mrs Henderson Presents
Matinee
Night of the Comet
Pootie Tang
Religulous
Repo Man
Shortbus
Strange Brew
They Live
Transformers the Movie (1986)
Westworld

I'm never sure what will be released and what won't when it comes to older stuff. I mean at this present juncture we don't have "Raiders of the Lost Ark", but we have "Monkeybone"? (WTF?)

Nope. Zero chance. We will never see any of these titles on BD.

You could also look at the first thread in this forum, the sticky one called "When Will ____ Be on Blu
Ray?"

Pootie Tang is part of your prized DVD collection?

Repo Man was just released last week by MoC in the UK. Matinee was released in France last year. And yes, as trespoochies notes, we do already have a thread for this kind of thing.

I'll use that thread from now on. And "Pootie Tang" is one of the greatest works in American cinema, so...yes.

Re: Likelihood of These Catalog Titles Coming to Blu?

If 1984 is the one with John Hurt, I think it's been OOP on DVD for a while, at least for Region 1. So I don't see that one getting released until something can be worked out.

25th Hour will surely be released at some point, but since it's Touchstone we have to wait for Disney, which isn't very aggressive about releasing live-action catalog titles. I wonder if Criterion could get it.

(And a Criterion Pootie Tang, of course. )

Re: Likelihood of These Catalog Titles Coming to Blu?

Some of these might make it, but I have to agree that for most of that list, the odds of a BD release are probably slim to none. There are, I admit, a few I've never heard of, but I've seen some of these films and own 1984, Ed Wood, and Mrs. Henderson Presents.

All terrific films, BDs would make me happy, but I have a feeling I will be viewing them on DVD for the rest of my life.

EDIT: I also assumed that 1984 was the John Hurt one. That's the one I own.

Re: Likelihood of These Catalog Titles Coming to Blu?

I've seen all these movies broadcast in HD in the past few years so I'd say that's a decent sign for some of them:

1984
25th Hour
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Defending Your Life
Idiocracy
The Iron Giant
Mallrats
Repo Man

They Live has an Italian Blu-ray but I believe it is region locked.

I also have Transformers the Movie on Blu from the UK which was region free. Looks like it's out of print now though. I better take care of it.

It would be great if these films were available on blu:

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (Jodie Foster)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Showdown in Little Tokyo (Dolph Lundgren, Brandon Lee)

I could see Criterion doing Man on the Moon. That would be pretty cool.

It is. Although pricey, it is a significant upgrade on the DVD. No R2 commentary though.

Re: Your Blu-ray wish list / "When will _______ be on Blu-ray?"

I'm surprised at the skepticism for the number of titles on PatD's list that will make it to BD. At least the well known titles.

I should sell off some of my 1984 DVDs before it does come out on BD, which I believe will happen.

Personally, some I'd like to see on BD are:

Barfly
The Year My Voice Broke
Flirting
The Station Agent
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Pink Floyd: The Wall

With all the rest of Jason Reitman's films out on Blu-ray it'd be nice to get Thank You For Smoking.

I'm surprised The Wall hasn't been released yet. They even had special opportunities with the 30th anniversary in 2010 (there was a DVD reissue for the 25th) and the CD reissues last year.

I was looking at the big 7-disc Wall Immersion box set which just came out last month and there was NO Blu-ray inside. How the hell can you have immersion without high-definition?? I'd like to see a 3D conversion of it too - imagine!

I thought there would be a release to coincide with Up in the Air... then I hoped for one with Young Adult... still waiting.

I would like to see They Live and Zulu (1964) on blu ray. They are actually out in Europe however the European releases (on both DVD and BR) are slightly cropped compared to the R1 DVDs.

I really wish that Paramount would get around to releasing Friday the 13th Parts IV-VIII. The franchise is cheesy but I'd love to get them on Blu-ray. As well as New Line/Warner releasing Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X, although I don't like those two entries very much.

Re: Your Blu-ray wish list / "When will _______ be on Blu-ray?"

I haven't read through here, so I'm sure someone has already mentioned this movie, but HDNet Movies has been playing In the Mouth of Madness. I think that movie deserves some type of Blu-ray release. I really enjoyed it back in the day. I haven't watched it in probably 15+ years, but I did record it so I'm looking forward to revisiting it.

That's one of my favorite Carpenter films - I've been looking for a HD broadcast for a while. I'd love a Blu-ray.

I was very pleasantly surprised when I noticed it. I was just browsing for interesting titles. It looks like it's not being aired again until May 31, but at least it is still scheduled for another showing.

Hopefully someone will upload a copy of the 1080i file online, it's the only Carpenter film from his productive period that I don't have on either Blu-ray or from a HD broadcast.
