Question about reconditioned HD DVD players

Hey guys, just wondering what your opinions are on reconditioned HD DVD players. I found a seller on ebay with 100% feedback that is selling the Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD Player High Definition HDA1 w HDMI for $299.99 plus $19 for shipping. Also, they had the same player (I believe) on another auction but for more cost.

I am thinking about taking the chance since the price is not to shabby. Your thoughts?

Here are the two auctions....not mine of course.

$299.99

$329.99

I'm a sucker for a good deal, but I'm always leary on reconditioned/refurbished electronics, especially on a "new" item like an HD DVD player. Just my .02 cents...

Speaking in generalities, refurbs are often a very good buy. The manufacturer usually replaces the most problematic parts, and if the unit is a defective unit, they have already repaired what the issue was and the unit will last as long as it should. This is especially important with the A1, which frequently had issues.

Bottom line Bill, this is a good cheap way to get into HD, and I wouldn't shy away just because it's a refurb.

If I can save $100 or more on something by buying a refurb, I'll buy it. As stated, if it's refurbed by the original manufacturer and carries at least some kind of warranty it's usually a good buy. If I didn't already have an HDDVD player that's what I'd buy because, hey, more money for movies.

Hey Bill!

Josh really nailed it!

I bought a factory refurbed XA1 from Overstock.com a while back and it's been working G-R-E-A-T!

We've been using it every night (average 2 to 3 movies a night & even more on weekends), and I've had absolutely NO problems with it and I am 100% - completely satisfied! I wouldn't hessitate to buy another refurb...ANYDAY!

Hope it works out for you as well as it has for me.

-Paul

Okay, what about the RCA HDV5000 player? I am aware that they are pretty much the same as the Toshiba. Any feedback on glitch issue with the RCA?

Hey guys for $100 more you can get the new version HD-A2 and you can get 3 free DVDs from Toshiba. If you know your going to buy 3 DVDs or moe than you are going to end up paying $40 more for the new model and for a non-refurbished item.

Hi Bill,

I have the RCA HDV5000, and I couldn't be any happier with it. I'm running firmware 2.0, ans I haven't had any problems.

I would wait to see what CES unveils, if Blu-ray hits a home-run this may be the nail in the coffin of HD.

And do tell.

What would constitute a "home run" in your mind?

Anyone who thinks that either format is in the coffin at the moment is kidding themselves. If anything, they're both in the same coffin.

Considering HD DVD still is outselling BD with regards to players (not counting the PS3) and software, BD is still a bit deeper, though.

Where do you BD fanboys get your information and opinions from? You and your ilk have been REPEATEDLY warned by mods about comments like these, which are WAY OT and a threadcrap, asides from being factually inaccurate.

And I'm saying this as an owner and supporter of BD.

Well am the owner of a xbox 360 HD add-on kind of small world isn't it. I didn't say anything as fact all I said is wait to see at CES. It is a fact that more studios back Blu-ray than HD.
