Best Buy handing out tickets for PS3's one hour before Sunday 12/31 store openings

If you want to snag a PS3 at your local Best Buy, looks like you'll have to get there early:

Thanks to speedy1961's BB flyer thread in the Bargains forum:

GAMERS: Playstation 3 Tickets >>>> We’ll hand out tickets one hour prior to store opening on Sunday 12/31/06. // One PS3 per ticket and tickets are valid for 1 hour after that’s store’s opening. // Minimum 25 60GB PS3s per store // Limit 1 per customer // No rain checks

I didn't think PS3's were that hard to find. ?

I think the WII is the console that is making people search high and low for.

Apparently they are if they're giving out tickets. I have never seen a Wii or PS3 in any of the stores in the NYC area.

People still camp out for both in my area.

It probably depends on your geographic location.
Major metro areas=impossible to find
Surrounding Burbs=difficult but not impossible(need to be at the right place at the right time)
Out in the stix=hit or miss depending on population

Can't you pretty much get one on ebay right now for right around what you would end up paying in a store?

Right before Christmas this guy (who realized his PS3 was an impulse buy) was selling his 60GB PS3 with Resistance, and ended up making just over a few bucks more than what he actually paid for it. He was just happy to make his money back.

PS3's are easy to find in stores around here in Wichita, KS. The Wii on the other hand is very hard to find.

I also have one i'll be returning. When i saw a bunch at Best Buy the other day, greed took over and i bought it to sell on ebay. When i got home and did my research, PS3s are selling on ebay for barely enough to cover purchase price, shipping and ebay fees. Many final bids would see the seller actually losing money if a reserve price hadnt been set.

I've yet to see a Wii in stores but the Circuit City in Union Square had a couple of PS3s on various occasions when I stopped by.

I've seen PS3s and friends have seen PS3s around. No Wiis though.

And isn't there a thread for this already in Video Games?

It's interesting to me, before the consoles were released I read an article (in a non-gaming publication) predicting that PS3's would be impossible to find, whereas Wii's would be almost as easy as Xbox360's to come by. Oops.

Well, I'm sure they get them in spurts and you have to be in the right place at the right time, like I was last December with the 360. But I haven't been that lucky, so I may try to snag a ticket on Sunday if the line is not too long.

Also, it seems that Amazon snuck in a bunch this morning as this note was on the website:

PS3 Available for Purchase 12/29: The Sony PlayStation 3 will again be available for purchase on Amazon.com on 12/29, Friday morning, at some point between 7am and 11am PST. We will be limiting purchases to one per household. We anticipate that we will sell through our inventory very quickly as demand for this product continues to be very high. At this time, we do not have any information on future Sony PlayStation 3 offers, but we will post updates on future availability on this page.
Needless to say they're already gone, though I would never order electronic equipment that has to be delivered by a local carrier, throwing boxes around the truck.

Sure there is, but last time I checked it was also a Blu-ray player.

As I said in another thread, the 20Gb PS3's are in stock & available right now.

Exactly. I do not read the video game forum, but if I was still in the market for a BD player and wanted a PS3 for that purpose I would never find out about it without this thread.

Thanks, but they're gone already. The 20GB is like the 360 Core though. I'm looking for the 60GB and don't want it bouncing in the back of a UPS truck.

Just a heads up to those interested, a lot of people using the PS3 just for HT are buying the all black 20gb version over the 60gb.

I also understand that the PS3's hard drive (SATA) is very easy to upgrade if you really want to increase storage capacity way beyond 20 GB or 60GB.

What are the differences besides the extra 40 gb? I have a 20gb one that I am debating keeping.

I got my info from this thread.

The differences are: 20GB vs 60GB drive, no wireless internet (but has wired), and no card slots for memory cards. All of these things can be addressed later (e.g., you can upgrade the drive to anysize you wanted, you can add a wireless interface, and you can use a USB memory card reader). None of these things have anything to do with Blu-ray playback whatever. Nor video games either!

Yeah, if you're gonna use it primarily for blu-ray then the 20gb is fine. I want to use it for online/network stuff and it's card reader as well, so the extra $100 is worth it for me. I would prefer the 20gb all-black model though, but I can probably take care of the 60GB strip with an exacto and electrical tape.

Was just at Best Buy in Pasadena TX, (3:45 pm 12-29-2006 making an exchange) they had 2 behind the counter at customer serivce & several in a cage. There's no must own titles... so why buy now?

Because this is the blu-ray section and folks here are discussing buying it as a BR player.
