Fearless

Nobody seems to have a review of the HD version of this movie yet.

Anybody know how the PQ is on this disc?

The review copy has been sent to me but I have not received it yet. I'm anxious to watch it, though.

Watched part of it last night. It's not Batman Begins, but it's a solid transfer. The movie's cinematography I didn't think was mind blowing to begin with, so this looks close to what I saw in the theater, and the HD side is miles above the SD side.

Right, the HD version, while not reference quality, does look very good. Especially when compared to the SD version on the flip side. I noticed the increased level of detail in the faces on the HD side as well as the colors which just seem to be a little bit more saturated.

Bottom line, if you're a Jet Li fan grab this as it's his last martial arts film and the battles with weapons are entertaining.

Here is another good review of it on HD DVD. Looks like another one to put in my cart !

While this thread is around, has anyone noticed that there seems to be frames missing in the movie? Especially when he fights against the fella (Zhuo?) on top of the wood and Master Chin, it skips a lot which is very annoying.

Other than that, the movie is fantastic but the translation sucks compared to the theatrical at least in my opinion.

Nice screen name, OP!

When I saw it in the theater it was the same way, it's on purpose

Will the Director's cut be released in HD? It totally blows away the theatrical cut.

Supermallet 02-08-07 06:58 PM

The HD DVD is a combo. The HD side has the unrated cut. The SD side has the rated cut.

Does it really? Because I've been holding out for an HD DVD release once I saw that there's a director's cut (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-...1sqw-43-9.html) but wonder if it's worth the wait given how great the film is in the US unrated cut (I've yet to see the theatrical cut).

Jeff Bridges was very good in this. :)

The Director's cut is different from the unrated version. The Director's cut contains an additional 40 or so minutes and also includes Michelle Yeoh.

Supermallet 02-09-07 12:17 PM

Well...damn. Although I find it hard to imagine that the movie would be made significantly better by adding 40 minutes, because part of what I liked about the movie is its tightness.

The extra 40 minutes fleshes out the story even more and I highly recommend it, keep in mind that there are no additional fight scenes in the extra 40 minutes. The highly touted and much anticipated scene (or intro I should say) with Michelle Yeoh could/should be cut out as it doesn't do anything for the movie.

I'm cool with there being no extra fights as I feel the film has plenty. So is the deleted fight scene from the US DVD still deleted? I hope so as I feel the conclusion of that scene makes the conclusion of the final fight redundant, robbing it of it's impact. Also, do the extra 40 minutes better explain all the behind the scenes social/political/economic issues that were going on at the time of Huo Yuanjia's life?

sycho316 02-19-07 08:13 PM

The Thai fight is inserted back into the movie, except with that spoiler part at the very end cut, so it's a bit abrupt, but I believe that it was for the better since the ending would be redundant as you said.

The extra 40 minutes are mainly all expansions of scenes already in the movie, nothing about the social/political/economic, unless you consider the beginning of a major push of Western influence into China. I feel that the extra 40 minutes explain more things that may seem kind of random, such as Huo meeting up with 2 of his disciples that are with him, also meeting up with Zhao Jian, also additional scenes of his childhood friendship with Nong Jingsun. Overall, I feel the dir. cut's of the movie is better.
