The receiver needs to have an optical port (SPDIF). Look for this under 'Digital In'. The receiver should also be able to decode a DTS audio signal. You'll be able to enjoy HDDVD soundtracks at DTS 1.5Mbps which is better than DTS dvds with a DTS soundtrack.

I'm assuming your HDTV is current.

I'll be able to help you better if you tell me the model A/V receiver you have.

Edited to add:
I just reread your post and realized you didn't specify a particular HDDVD player. If you don't have optical digital audio capability, you can have DD True HD audio (better than what I mentioned above) if your A/V receiver has 6 channel analog ports if you couple it with Toshiba's HDA1 (1st generation player).

In most cases, yes, your receiver will work ok, as Centurion said above.

If your receiver has six channel analog inputs, HD DVD models that can do analog out:
Toshiba A1, XA1, XA2 (soon to be released)
RCA clone of the A1 (HD D1?)

Models that can't do analog out but have optical out:
Toshiba A2
Microsoft Xbox 360 add-on HD DVD drive (I think)

Just a friendly correction...neither one of these HDDVD units have coax digital audio out. Just optical.

Thanks, I'll correct that. It surprises me that the A2 has neither coax nor analog. (The A1 has both optical and coax, as you likely know.)

I hope that most older receivers have optical inputs or they really may not be compatible with some HD DVD players, such as the A2.

Not yet. My tv was damaged during shipment, so I'm waiting on a new one. Received my new speakers yesterday. Wouldn't you know, one was damaged during shipment

Just not having good luck. Haven't tried my receiver yet, hopefully it works.

Looks like they'll sound like Bose speakers.

LOL.

The guys at HTD are awesome though. They're going to send me a replacement midrange driver which is held by four screws. I took it apart last night to see if I should even be attempting to fix it and it looks pretty simple.

So I'm going to try that, and if it doesn't sound right, they'll replace the whole tower (they offered to replace the whole tower first if I wanted, but they are back ordered until the 28th).
