Amazon shows that the Miami Vice disk is a combo and that the HD-DVD side is rated but the DVD side is unrated. Why would they do this?? Why not put the same version of the movie on both sides.

I must have missread the product description because I had taken it to mean that the theatrical and director's cuts are available on BOTH sides.

High Def Digest says the HD side is the unrated cut.

Well that's good news indeed. Now I just gotta get Amazon to apply the 10% off discount.

I just noticed the technical specs.
I loved the sound of gunfire in this movie and I'm glad to see Universal finally supporting Dolby TrueHD.
Technical specs for the HD DVD side of the disc include the Unrated Cut presented in 1080p/VC-1 widescreen (2.40:1) transfer and Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks.

I don't think it really matters. The theatrical dragged for a good amount in the middle. The extended cut add 7 minutes of additional scenes. Probably a good half of that is in the beginning with the racing boats.

With Mann films,I'd always go with the theatrical version over the alternate cuts. At least if Manhunter and Last of the Mohigans and Thief(not available in theatrical cut unfortunately) are any indication.
Mann seems to have final cut on the theatrical versions(thus they work well). And the 'DC' alternate versions of the above films, seem more like experimentation with mostly bad editing decisions that ruin the films.
I don't know if Vice will be the same thing(I have'nt seen it yet),but with Mann,i'd be very careful

You know, it's been so many years since I last saw the TC of Last Of The Mohicans that the DC doesn't bother me in the least. But I have to agree with Manhunter. But with a runtime difference of 7 minutes, I doubt the DC of Miami Vice will be too much of a departure from the TC.

I've read some extensions of some scenes, and some edits of others. I missed this one and I'm a huge Mann fan, so I'm in. Mann's gunfire is always a great choice to show off your audio equipment. Too bad Amazon's 10% is working on this title. I'm gonna wait a few more days and hope they add it. I have a feeling this one won't be $19.99 at Walmart like Supes is, even though both are combos.

Well, Kris at AVS, who's a big poster there, says there is definitely no TrueHD track on this.
I have a feeling Universal doesn't really care about TrueHD. I mean, if it's still a technical issue at this point, then that's kinda pathetic.

That sucks. I was really hoping this'd get a TrueHD track.

The gunshots on this movie didn't sound as good as Collateral or Heat. I don't want it to spoil it anybody but I think in one scene Mann purposely made the sound a bit muted. I thought I would like it more on DVD but I still didn't like it.

The fact that its 7 total minutes added is very misleading. They have removed some scenes as well as added so its more than 7 minutes of new footage. I have seen the new version and it is without a doubt, at least IMO, a better cut of the film. They got rid of some of the fluff scenes that did nothing to advance the plot and added others that helped flesh out the characters. The beginng is a drastic difference. As I said in another post on this topic Ifelt that the beginning was the weakest part of this film and the new beginning is drastically better. Its has a much more Miami Vice feel to it and it introduces the bad guy they were after in the bar scene and also sets the stage for the whole boat part of the movie by showing you that both Tubbs and Crocket are serious boaters and very capable of doing what they set out to do in terms of transporting shipments for Haysus and Jose.
